How Many Social Sites Do You Belong To?
I counted the social sites I can remember that I belong to and it was around 20 or so.
I really don’t see that I have benefited from MySpace, Bumpzee, Blog Catalog, Stumble or MyBlogLog, but then again perhaps I don’t use them correctly. I really don’t have the time to devote to all those social sites, so why in the world do I keep joining them? Why do you? Technorati has me stumped also at one point I had a lot of links, but they disappeared, go figure.
I know we expect to get traffic and if we are selling something maybe a purchase, but do we really expect to be friends with everyone that adds us and why do they add us? I always accept friendship request, but not sure what the purpose is and when people join your community what are you suppose to do with them. Is there some special thing I am suppose to be doing? Well, apparently I haven’t a clue.
I have been wondering if I am becoming anti social in my golden years or does the golden years start at 65? At any rate I consider the time I’ve been with Bill to be my golden years because they have been the best years of my life. I guess being social and active in communities helps you define how popular and successful you want to be with whatever you are trying to accomplish.
Many people say they blog for themselves and I’m not sure I understand that. Why put it online if you aren’t expecting to gain from it in some way, what’s the point, just keep a diary. I guess it could be therapeutic to post whatever you feel like and get things off your chest, but I tend to like the idea of making a couple dollars. It doesn’t have to be a fortune and since it is my blog I guess I can do as I please with in the law of course.
So I guess that means I can be sociable when I please and just enjoy the ride without feeling pressure to keep joining all these social sites because I think I might be missing something and it’s the thing to do to stay on top of current trends. Although I’m not sure why I would feel that way. I guess I just hate feeling left out and want to know what all the fuss is about and usually it turns out to be nothing.

Hi Jude,
Joining big social sites is really a burden to me. For me, smaller ones are more friendly.
However, I think it’s better if we socialize within our blog.
Your posts are great that makes you a great social blogger.
Thanks.

guardianm angel,
Thanks for stopping by, the post I just read on your blog made a lot of sense. Do people ever try to pick you or your blog apart because you give tips about blogging, meaning do they expect you and your blog to be perfect? Maybe you don’t feel good for a week and are not able to follow your own guides, just wondered knowing how a lot of people always try to find fault. Have a great day, it’s raining here.

I probably belong to around 10 or 15 social sites. The one I use the most is definitely Twitter. Along with a lot of superfluous and entertaining comments, I’ve pick-up a large amount of interesting information. I’m always learning something new.

Hi Marty thanks for commenting and that reminds me that Twitter is one of the sites I did manage to miss and I hear people talking about them all the time, I must be slipping.

I belong to StumbleUpon and Twitter. Otherwise I try not to overdo it; I only have so many resources during the day, and I spend the rest of it on my blog and a couple of forums.
Social media sites are all about networking. Networking does not necessarily mean friends, but it does mean getting in touch with the public side of folks.
As for me; I do blog for myself. But I also blog for my audience. Presenting useful and/or entertaining material for other people is simply what I like to do. Money is one thing; but audience is its own coinage, and I think better in the long run.

Of course, that’s just my point of view. I’m not bashing folks who blog for money or who have ads. Some of the folks I learn most from emphasize blogging and marketing together.

Hi Arachne Jericho,
Thanks for stopping and sharing. It’s nice to get other views about some of the things I think about. It helps me get a better perspective about the reasons we do certain things.

I have no idea how many online social networks I’m active on. Essentially, when a new one pops up, I try to test it right away. If it is compelling, I stay with it. If not, I only visit it rarely.
What matters, however, isn’t how many social sites you are, but the conversations you are in on these sites. Right now, Twitter and Utterz are great for me. Facebook is okay. StumbleUpon and del.icio.us are great tools but I don’t really engage in them a lot.
BumpZee never seemed to take off. I’m still in Blog Explosion, MyBlogLog and BlogCatalog.
Then there are special sites, like Change.org, DFALink, and many others I like to use.
What other sites do folks here like?

Hi Aldon,
Thanks for stopping I was going to leave a comment on your blog, but I didn’t want to register for something else. I personally find more interest and value using Entrecard over the many that I have tried and I certainly seem to be interacting with more blogs than I ever have. I definitely get more and better traffic that also interact more than any of the others I have tried.

Very interesting post. I am wallowing around in confusion myself. I’m only just learning blogging etiquette. I suppose Entrecard is the one I have found more blogs through, although I have no idea if I have got many readers from it. It makes sense that it has advantages because of ‘dropping’. I’ve found that commenting regularly on other blogs usually brings that person to your blog,at least once, although not always.

Hi Babs,
I like Entrecard the best and like you said commenting does bring visitors. I have recieved more comments thru that program than any other. At least when you leave a comment people check your site before they let it go through. I was going to leave a comment on your blog, but it didn’t have the option that I normally use. I wanted to tell you how beautiful your talent is. Maybe if you come back you will see this reply.

I like Entrecard best, even though I join a few others.
As you said, I’m not sure what’s the point of being friends in myblogcatalog or those other social sites..
I guess it’s good to know that you have someone who wants to be friends with you lol

A lot, but mostly I maintain only 1 or 2.
I am a member of myspace, facebook, friendster, multiply, twitter.

You said, “I really don’t see that I have benefited from MySpace, Bumpzee, Blog Catalog, Stumble or MyBlogLog”
Myspace is the type of site where you get what you put into it. Some people use it to connect with friends and message each other in an informal/casual way. It’s very beneficial for that if you actually have a lot of friends on it. If you want to meet random people and chat, it works for that too. The same can be said for facebook. They are really good sites for keeping in touch and finding classmates or new people.
The social bookmarking sites seem a lot less valuable. I don’t really see why someone would need a thousand bookmarks when they’d probably never go visit 99% of them again. Just seems like a novelty niche.

Hi Michael, Eric, and JBourne
I really appreciate your input because I really couldn’t figure out how people could use all their time maintaining all those memberships and still get anything done. I have forgotten half that I joined and I still have friends sending me messages to join new ones that are springing up. Thank-you very much for taking the time to comment I know your time is valuable.

Stumble and Entrecard have brought traffic to my site. Obviously Facebook and MySpace are just a joke. I guess they’re a way to keep in touch with friends without actually calling or hanging out.
