Cosmetology Reciprocity Disclaimer

I have a Cosmetology license for the state of Pennsylvania so therefore I try to keep up with the ever changing rules and regulations for my state. I am not an expert on the reciprocity laws of every state, but I have tried to provide information and links to help you find the information for your state that might help you find what you need.

Each state has it’s own set of rules and regulations that change frequently as do the links to some of those Cosmetology State Board Websites which I have recently updated so you can search for the answers you need. I really have no quick answers for you about other states, I have to do the research myself in order to answer some of your questions.

My best advice to anyone seeking reciprocity information is to contact your state board directly or the facility that you received your training from and ask them because they are more knowledgeable about the state that you need information about. I have provided much information on this blog, but instead of using the search feature to find what is needed people simply ask the same questions over and over.

One of the questions most people ask is about reciprocity and what to do when moving from one state to another. That link will take you to a post I did awhile back, but no one seems to find it and repeatedly asks the same questions. I am sorry if I’m not able to answer everyone’s question, but if you search this blog I am sure you will find something that may help.

I honestly do not have the time to keep up with any other state reciprocity  or rules and regulations other than PA so I would appreciate if  anyone stopping by has an answer for a comment about the state you live in that was asked then by all means please help out your fellow professionals and leave a reply. I know everyone expects a quick fix online and you can get it if you simply check with your own state board.

I’m about to get my Cosmetology license for the state of Louisiana (1500hrs), and I’m planning to move and get my license in the state of Iowa (2100hrs). I’d love if someone could tell me how to get my license in the state of Iowa, I heard i will only need to take a written test and that’s it! but if anyone has more information i would appreciated a lot! TIA

Andrea C/ You will not be able to just take a test, in fact you will have to acquire more hours to take their exams. You should contact that board and find out precisely what you need to do.

    Hi,

I currently hold a Hairstylist license in the state of Colorado. I am thinking of moving to Illinois, however am confused by the process since it doesn’t seem Illinois has just a Hairstylist program, just full Cosmetology.

I am having a tough time finding an answer to this question anywhere. Does it seem as though I will have to take classes in Illinois to become a full Cosmetologist? Thanks so much for your help, greatly appreciate it.
