My name is Judy, you can call me Jude or whatever is comfortable. The picture at the left was me when I decided to go back to school at 45. I will be 57 next August and I am very happy I made it this far in my life. I always wanted to be a cosmetologist, but it wasn’t until I was 45 that I went to beauty college to fulfill my dream. Can you imagine how an older person might feel out of place with young people that could be their children or grandchildren and trying to learn something totally alien to them? The kids were pretty cool about me being so much older.
I took this education very seriously unlike when I was young and thought I already knew everything. After I got use to school I found it very enjoyable learning new things. The part I enjoyed most was cutting and learning hair design. I liked color also, but I hated perms well I didn’t hate them I just couldn’t make my fingers work right when roding the head because my fingers are double jointed and they would catch sometimes. So I was never fast enough.
It was a great course and I learned many things. Of course you learn much more when you are practicing in the salon and there are always beauty shows to attend and learn new techniques and your always learning new and exciting things in house. Your learning never stops unless you quit for whatever reasons.
Since it was a part of my life and I have this knowledge I might as well use my education here maybe it will help someone or at least I hope so. I would appreciate any comments you care to make and if you have questions about anything I will give you my advice if you need it.
thanks so much for your information regarding reciprocity amongst states. this has proved to be an invaluable tool for me as i search for a fulfilling career. i cannot imagine the impact your site has had on those who are like-minded. such a simple listing having such a powerful, helpful impact…
Hi Elizabeth,
Thank-you so much for your comment. It does seem that people need and appreciate the help and I enjoy helping when I can.
Hi Elizabeth!
I’m so glad i found your web site, I’m about to finish school in Louisiana and planning to get my cosmetologist license in the state of IOWA.. now i don’t know what do i need to get this other license as a cosmetology too since in LA (1500hrs are required) and in IA (2100hrs are required)..I’ve heard of just taking a written test and will get my license in IOWA… is that true?
Hi my name is Jill
I have a question i hope you can answer?
I have 1000 hours in Rhode Island unfortunetly i have not finished school yet and it has been 5 years since i have been in school i plan on going back to school this year. how many years before the RI state board will take away my credits i heard it was 10 years is that correct??
Judy,
You are a life saver. I called CA State Board AND the cosmetology school that I attended years ago to find my expired manicuring license and NO ONE had any records or way of finding my license number. I just happened to google, “how do i find my expired ca manicurist license” tonite and your site was listed first. I returned to the State site and found it myself, with your advice of course! I can’t believe how incompetent our government agencies are…it astounds me almost daily!
Anyway, I am now in esthetician school and needed my old license to help deduct hours from this course and possibly sit for the manicuring exam again (never thought I’d use it so let it expire years ago) but couldn’t find the information. YOU AND YOUR WONDERFUL WISDOM SAVED ME! MANY, MANY THANKS TO YOU.
Julie,
Thanks so much for visiting my blog and I’m so happy my information helped. This past year has been a busy one for me and I’m afraid I haven’t kept up with my blog. If my information helps only a few then it has served it’s purpose. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Hi Judy-
What an awesome website! I just thought I would post to let anyone out there who is trying to come to California and pass their state board exam that I tutor. I currently am a State Board Specialist a excellent school in Northern California (Sacramento area). I also own an rental kit business. I that been tutoring for that past several year and am always glad to help.
This is a weird request. I work in a nursing home in TN and I have a patient that was a cosmotologist in Libertyville, IL. She has advanced Alzheimer’s and I have only limited info about her. I need to get in touch with her family but there is no record of them….only the few things that she has told me over the last 2 years like she has 3 sons. Her name is Drewnette Koppen, her license number was 011099456 and was issued in 1962 but has not been renewed any time recently. I would really like to be able to get in touch with someone in her family to let them know where she is and how she is doing. Any information you can give me on how to track down info on her application/license would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.
Angie,
Reagarding Drewnette Koppen:
I looked up her license and it doesn’t give an address or personal info. If I were you I would contact the police dept and explain the situation and see if they can help.

I attended school in NM which requires 1600 hrs… I had to move to NC (miltary husband) after completing 1504hrs… NC requires 1500 hrs… I can’t seem to get a straight answer from the state board here, can I just take the state board test here?… and I’m confused about their apprentice program… It says 1200hrs… Does that mean you have to already have 1200 hrs and do the 6mo program?.. and do you still take state boards after that?… They had a form to fill out for after you have completed the apprentice program that looks like you are just applying for your license… So confused and can’t get a straight answer!

Hi
I would like to know do I need to be licensed to open my own beauty school? Also can you direct me on other resources and information regarding this. I would hire licensed teachers to teach the craft. Im located in NJ. Thanks
Wow , great website Jude! I had a cosmetology license in Arizona years ago (hours used to be 1800) about 1985 and it expired after moving to California in 1987 to marry. When I became divorced I needed to pick up a second job quickly but it seemed like allot of hassle with Arizona State board at the time. My remedy was to go back to a California school for just manicuring since I was offered a sweet commission for pedicures only within a 60 days. I did pedicures for two years only until new salary opportunities arose. Stability was needed to provide for my young single parenting days. I am now 47 years young , with my kids now grown and in college. I would love to pursue my real passion in cosmetology. I am unable to get any information from Arizona again but I did go to Arizona Academy of Beauty and tehy still exist. Can I just get a copy of my old certifications and take the cosmetology exam or did I miss my opportunity? When I went to fill out the California Application for Examination and Initial License Fee (page 1: the section for Out of State/Out of Country does not meet my situation. Have I banked over 2000 hours or did I lose my opportinity to fullfill my passion?
Thanks again for an awesome website to come to.

Hi I live in CA I went to cosmetology school and graduated in 2007. I completed my 1600 hours but I never took my state board exam. Do I still qualify to take the test? Are the state board procedures the same as back in 2007? I know there’s a new Miladys book so should I get the book and study off of that? Please help!!
I went to school and met my requirements to achieve a cosmotology license in the state of massachusetts in 92′. My cosmetology license in massachusetts was active for 11 years and I transferred my license to maryland and worked 11 years there. What are the requirements for me to transfer my license back to massachusetts
Hello,
I have a question about reciprocity. I am a fully licensed cosmetologist in Oregon, but I only do hair. I will be moving to Texas in a few months. Texas does not have reciprocity with Oregon, so they told me I would have to retake my practical and written exam. However, I then discovered that Oregon does have reciprocity with Washington (state), and Washington has reciprocity with Texas. If I got my licenses in Washington, could I then just apply for my licenses through reciprocity in Texas without having to retake the tests? Or because I went to school in Oregon, would they not let me do that?
Thanks in advance!
