If I had the beauty school experience to do over again I would have to choose learning more about computers instead. It’s so much easier to touch a computer than a person and you certainly don’t have to be a people person with your computer. While I enjoy the cutting aspect which is fun, I actually hated almost everything else, but of course I didn’t know all of that at the time.
Unless you open your own shop where you can do the services you please so long as you have a following you have to do whatever is asked of you in a salon. I actually didn’t know everything I would have to learn when I went to Empire or all of the requirements I would have to meet in order to apply for my license. I worked on a lot of ethnic hair and most of the credits I got for the perm section happened to be straightening perms.
I did give a few other perms, but I hated perms and what the chemicals do to a persons hair and scalp if not used correctly. Believe me there are too many aspiring cosmetologists out there that don’t know how to give a proper perm. I mentioned before that I didn’t mind color, but you can’t pick and choose which services you want to do. I made a lot more money working as a waitress and bartender and I didn’t have to touch anyone.
Computer knowledge will get you a lot further in life and a career and you will definitely make more money, if I had only known. This isn’t to discourage anyone I just thought I’d let you know that my 12,000 dollars would have been better spent if I had only known how much I would love computers over the beauty industry. They didn’t have computers when I went to school and I didn’t have a personal pc until I graduated Empire and started working in 99.
