Ethnic Labels-Being Politically Correct

November 18th, 2008

I must be getting old because I simply don’t understand a lot of things of late. We pick and choose so many different names we want to be known as or called that I just can’t keep up. I was sitting on my front porch the other day when two young girls of ethnic decent  walked by and the one said, “My Mother encourages me to steal.” The other one said,” My Mom says it’s bad, but she does it herself so I don’t know.”

Then all of a sudden I hear a young male voice holler out “Hey Nigger” and they stopped and waited with a smile on their face till their ethnic friend caught up. I was appalled that a black person can use that term, but if a white person used it, it would be racist. I hear it all the time with the young people coming home from school and they use a lot of other slang words to talk to each other and I heard them talking about wiggers so I looked it up online.

What is a “Wigger” ? Well if you click that link you can read what Wikipedia says it is and I have certainly heard white people do their best to talk and act black. This is certainly a phenomenon that I don’t understand, why would anyone want to be other than what they are? I know you start sounding like the people you’re around the most and admire and pick up their expressions and mannerisms, married people do it all the time.

My great niece probably talks and sounds blacker than any black person I have ever met or known. Is black even politically correct? I have no clue what to say any more because it has gone from colored to negro. When I was in school it use to be, Say It Loud I’m Black And I’m Proud and now it seems that they want to be referred to as African American,  I really can’t keep up nor do I know what is expected.

Do the native American Indian keep switching what they want to be called? I personally think we are all just human and the sooner we accept that fact the better off we’ll be.
