Is It Easier To Give Or Receive?

September 2nd, 2008

We all feel good when we are able to give and for most of my life I have been the giver and at times I have let myself feel used, but what happens when you get involved with a giver when you have always been use to supplying everything? The ideal setting would be an equal partnership of give and take, but some people have a hard time being on the receiving end and that includes the wonderful man in my life now.

Up till 6 years ago most of the people in my life always expected me to either pay my own way or pay mine and theirs and they simply expected me to buy great presents for them so usually I would turn off my emotions after awhile. Then I met Bill and everything changed he was the giver and provider and didn’t expect anything from me materially or expect me to contribute in anyway financially, now for a giver that is something that is very hard to get use to.

I wish I could say that I am still the giver I use to be, but I have found that I receive much more than I give. As far as I’m concerned it’s easier to give than to receive because then you don’t have to be grateful so I have learned a little humility. I don’t feel like I’m a horrible person though because I have learned to accept graciously when someone wants to give me something or do something for me.

Being able to give of yourself and time is more important than any gift that might be received or given. In this relationship in order to fulfill my giving mindset I have learned to be a giver in a different way because material things actually mean very little when you can’t give emotionally and I have learned better how to give my time to listen and support and love. I also contribute in other ways like taking care of the house and remodeling projects.
