A few Home Remedies For Kids And Pets

August 13th, 2008

Kids/Babies Remedies: Skin So Soft is an effective way to keep insects off. We often used that product when we lived in the mtns. and it was very effective. If your child has a toothache and you can’t get to the dentist right away try soaking a small  cotton ball in vanilla extract and apply it directly on the sore spot.

For teething babies of course we have the rings that you freeze or teething biscuits or you can freeze an apple slice and give that to them to soothe or you can take a wet very cold cloth and wrap it around your finger and gently rub it across the gums or just a very cold clean cloth that they can chew on.

Buy an aloe vera plant for burns it’s much cheaper than buying prepared products at the drugstores that have aloe vera in it and it works great. Don’t use butter for burns because that doesn’t work, but you can apply mustard to a burn because that will take the sting out of a burn.

Another problem we seem to have with our children are splinters and I even manage to get one every now and then. If you apply a little wood glue and let it dry it should then pull off easily taking the splinter with it instead of using a needle or tweezers to pick and dig and possibly cause an infection or even more soreness.

At one time or another children also pick up head lice and I have been told that using mayonnaise or olive oil spread over the scalp and hair will effectively smother them so they can easily be removed. Make a habit of checking your children’s head on a daily bases and stress the importance of never using anyone else’s brush or comb or trying on someone eles’s hat and scarves.

Pet Remedies:If you use pert plus shampoo to bathe your dog with you can easily remove fleas. Vinegar can be used to clean your dogs ears, but make sure they are thoroughly dried and this will even help prevent infections. If your dog has an ear infection  you can insert a small amount of marigold or tea tree oil to kill bacteria. If your pet has a weak dermal layer in the ear you can use a rosemary extract to help build immunity.

Our dog Sadie always gets a very peculiar odor sometimes when she’s been outside and I usually take one of the dryer sheets and rub it over her and that seems to help with the smell it usually works better if she’s a little damp. Our dogs shed so much and when I vacuum the bag starts to really smell so to eliminate that odor I simply sprinkle a small amount of the arm an hammer pet powder and that eliminates odors.

If you cut your pets nails to the quick be sure that you put some baby powder on to help stop the bleeding and to prevent infections from entering. If you have any remedies that work for you please feel free to leave a tip so others can try them also.
