Jen... Since you haven't worked for 3 years according to what I read on their site you would have to take their exams, but it's best to contact them directly and get the information you need. I'm assuming you've been to their state board site if so you would have seen this:

910. Out-of-State Applicants

(a) An applicant who desires to establish eligibility for examination for a license in this state upon the basis of practice, study or training outside this state, or supplementary training in a licensed school in this state, or any combination thereof, shall furnish proof of his or her qualifications to the board as follows:

(1) An applicant who desires credit for practices in another state or country shall file with the board, on the form prescribed by it (Form #03E-145, Affidavit of Experience-Form C, Rev 1/91), an affidavit from a disinterested person verifying such practice, together with an authenticated statement from the licensing agency in the state or country where such practice took place showing that the applicant was licensed to engage in such practice, if a license was required therefore.

So I'm sure they will give you credit for the 1 and 1/2 that you worked.

i was wondering i have a cosmetology license in vermont and i wanted to move to california. i worked in a salon for a year 1/2 . i have completed 1500 hours at school for Barre vermont tech cosmetology school. would i need to go back to school for 100 hours since california requires 1600 hours? and would i need to take the practical and written tests again if i wanted to be licensed in california? or could i just pay a fee and take the written state law test to get my license in california?
