Is It Wrong To Be Nostalgic?

April 11th, 2008

Nostalgia means a bittersweet longing for things, persons, or situations of the past and how many of us long for things long past? I know I look back on my earlier years and wonder why nothing is the same. Yes I know everything changes, but is it all for the betterment of man?

Most of it is better and it’s wonderful that we have made so many advancements in science and found ways to improve our health and life in general, but many of us yearn for the simplicity of life and wonder why everything had to get so complicated. At least those of us that are older can remember simpler times.

I really feel sorry for the youth of today and it makes me grateful for my past because I have known a less complicated world than our children are growing up in. I’m not saying that we didn’t have the same temptations as our children, but it seemed easier to deal with for some reason.

I enjoy watching the world change and evolve it’s very exciting and I really hope I will be around to see flying vehicles. I certainly hope I wont be to old to maneuver one. It’s exciting to see all the changes and at times I am totally dumbfounded at how creative the mind is that can dream and achieve so many things.

So is it wrong to be nostalgic and long for the good things we remember from the past? I see nothing wrong with the remembrance of good things from the past so long as we are able to also open our minds and look forward to new and innovative things in our future. Each phase of our life is a learning process and I for one enjoy it immensely.

I think it’s OK to be nostalgic every once in a while as long as a person doesn’t live in the past or get depressed thinking about the “good old days.” You and I appreciate the less complicated world that we grew up in, and that’s a good thing.
I miss my parents from time to time, and it’s always comforting to remember the love they had for me. I also miss our daughter living at home. She’s 26, married, and has a baby. I wouldn’t wish her back if I could, but I still get nostalgic remembering when we’d watch a movie together on the sofa. She would lay her head on a pillow in my lap even when she was college age. :) I miss that!
