New Jersey Reciprocity

November 30th, 2007

Danielle: Hi. I am currently a hairstylist at a Regis salon in Mnpls.. I’m considering moving to New Jersey. I was wondering what I would have to do if I were to move.

Answer: Well, first you would need to get verification sent to the state you are moving to. Read what Minn. says to do.

New Jersey says: Licensure by endorsement is offered to cosmetologist-hairstylist applicants who satisfy the requirements for licensure as a cosmetologist-hairstylist, and hold a current license as a barber and beautician in another state or foreign country.

Additional information regarding the practice of cosmetology and hairstyling, barbering, skin care or manicuring, or inquiries on how to file a complaint, can be forwarded to Mr. Jay A. Malanga, Executive Director, New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling, P.O. Box 45003, Newark, NJ 07101; or by calling the Board at (973) 504-6400. You may also send your questions via e-mail to askconsumeraffairs@dca.lps.state.nj.us.

You would probably be required to take additional tests since they have merged the barber and cosmetology license. For more information: Read their faqs

I have NY license, and have worked at a salon for two yrs. I want to know the work experience would qualify by reciprocity in nj.

NY and NJ do not have reciprocity, but NJ says reciprocity is only offered in New Jersey to persons licensed as both a barber and cosmetologist-hairstylist. (New Jersey will recognize applicants without administering an exam to those holding a license from a state whose requirements are equal to or greater than New Jerseys. Licensure by endorsement is offered to cosmetologist applicants if they satisfy the requirements for licensure and presently hold a current license as a barber and beautician in another state or foreign country.)
