If your planning to move from one state to another the first thing of course is to check and see if the state you are moving to has reciprocity with your state and you can do that by visiting that states official cosmetology state board site for any updates and their requirements. I have mentioned many times that statutes and rules are constantly changing and different sites may not always have the latest and up to date information you need.
Secondly you need to check your state board site and see if you can file online or if you have to send a written request for certification of your license and requirements needed with the fee to send your certification to the state you are moving to. That can take up to a month or longer, but they will let you know usually how long it will take.
The state where you are moving to would then get in touch with you and let you know how to proceed by either sending you an application or directing you to their website where you could download the application and send it in with the correct fee. Almost all states view applications on a individual bases and make their decision.
As far as I know you can be licensed in as many states as you want so long as you qualify and pay your renewal fees. I personally would never give up my Pennsylvania license if I ever moved because I never know what may happen and I wouldn’t want to go through the process of having it reinstated if I decided to move back.

Hey, I have a quick question, I’m not sure if you have an answer or any idea but I have no idea where to look.
I’m going to beauty school in Oregon but, I’m moving to California as soon as school is over and I can’t get a hold of anyone from the board about my questions. I know Oregon grants reciprocity and I heard California does now too…I know that in Oregon you can take any combination of courses ie[ hair nails, or esthetics] or all of them, and I’m taking hair and esthetics but do i need my FULL cosmetology license [hair nails and esthetics] in order to do hair services and work in a hair salon in california? I will not be practicing nails at all, so i don’t want to waste money and time if i do not have to. Do you know anything about this or where I can contact someone who does?
I have been a hairdresser for 30 years. I moved to Oklahoma from Kansas a year ago. My licence is due in March 09, I have not practiced cosmetology for a couple of years am I still going to have to take test’s to get my license in Oklahoma or can I just transfer it and pay fees?
I need to know if I get my Cosmetology License in the State of Georgia, and I still use it in the State of California
What states require a hairdresser to have manicure & pedicure training before they can be licensed to do hair? I know California & Washington require it, but am having trouble finding all the information on all the rest of the states. Thank you.

Shah I don’t know which state you are talking about. Many states will cooperate with other countries. I suggest you talk with the admin of the school you attended and see if they can make some alternative suggestions and help. These people are knowledgeable in the rules of the state you live in and should have good answers for you.
Hello! I have 600 hours at paul mitchell in TN ( 1500 req.) and I am looking to transfer to FL (1200 req.) How late can I transfer (paul mitchell accepts all paul mitchell credits) considering state board studies in TN will not apply in florida. Can I stay in TN and get 1199 hours (worst case) and transfer to florida’s school to finish up my hour and then test for a florida license.. or do I have to have a certain amount of that state boards hours in order to gradute and be allowed to test for floridas state board? Sorry this is so confusing.
Laura… I really can’t help you with that, but here’s the thing wouldn’t you have to pay tuition to that school also even though it’s a Paul Mitchell? Here’s what they say.
Q: May I transfer from another school?
A: We welcome transfer students and we need to make sure that you are currently in good standing and you have resolved financial commitments to your previous schools, and if we have availability.
I think you should talk with your instructor and see what they advise you, I’m sure they no more about this and how it would work with these 2 Southern states. I can’t imagine that they would enroll you for 1 hour too much paper work.
I have a manicurist license in Texas. I want to work in CA. What should I do to transfer my license from Texas to CA. If I want to keep my Texas license, how can I have another manicurist license in CA? Do I need to take other theory and practical exams in CA to get the CA’s manicurist license while I have the Texas’ license? How long does it take me to do the duplication?
Thank and regards
Kate
I have an Illinois cosmetology License and am wanting to move to California what will I have to do to transfer it.
Thanks,
Jessica
I am an esthetician with 5yrs experience in CA moved to GA last month. I just found out that GA does not reciprocate CA license so I need to start beauty school 1000 hrs all over again. It is really hard to believe. Really??? Does that happen to everybody?
snook ki m if there’s no reciprocity then you just have to take their state boards if you have the accredited hours that are required by Georgia instead of trading license. Maybe you misunderstood what they said. I have never heard of anyone having to go back to school unless they didn’t have enough hours.
OMG I lost your answer I was copying it and sam it vanished could you post again so sorry
Thanks
BD
