If you have a cosmetology or cosmetician license you can do many things and you don’t just have to work in a salon. You could work with a large cosmetic company as a beauty consultant so you can learn the ropes and there is always training within the company.
Beauty consultants work in department stores, cruise ships, hotels and many other places and you would need to be well groomed and dress fashionably and have good people skills and be able to advise clients about products that would be good for them. In most states you don’t have to have a license to work in these places, but I’m sure it would depend and be a big plus on your side.
If you are interested in starting your own business and working for yourself, you do not necessarily need to have any prior beauty training or experience, although it certainly is a plus. You would have to figure out the costs to start your own business though and it can be risky when first starting out so it is best to work for someone else at first so you can acquire experience and get paid for it at the same time.
Beauty consultants give advice to their clients on how they should dress, wear makeup, or wear their hair, often for special occasions. You get to charge these clients for your expert knowledge however without a license you could not apply make-up for them, but that would be something that you would have to find out in your particular state. Your expert knowledge and advice could be very valuable. You can set your own fees, but you will want to check the competition to see what they are charging so you can have a competitive price.
