New York and New Jersey do not share reciprocity below is the list that they supply even though they say on the instructions below that they do not have reciprocity with any states. I think that was changed. You would have to take their state boards. For more specific questions you might have please get in touch with New York directly.(Number is provided above.

I recently relocated to be near my elderly father, I mailed in a letter to the Washington State Cosmetology board requesting my (4) licenses be reinstated due to the fact that I was caring for my mother when she had her stroke she has since passed away they approved the request then my cousin who is POA for my father asked me to move to Ariona to help my father he was very depressed and not doing well, according to the information posted on this site for reciprocity it states I cannot now get a license here is this correct, but I can in WA but I am now living here.

Please let me know what if anything I can do I would like to continue using my licenses.

  4. jude8753 says:

    Hello Alicia,
State rules and regulations change all the time and it’s always best to check with the state boards concerned to see what has been updated and changed. Other web sites may not always have updated info. Could you please direct me to the information you read that stated you couldn’t reciprocate your Washington State licenses for Arizona’s?

For all Arizona forms and information

  8. jude8753 says:

    Barbara,
You need to have your certified hours sent to NJ from Fla State board for more specific answers you can call the NJ Board at (973) 504-6400. You may also send your questions via e-mail to askconsumeraffairs@dca.lps.state.nj.us.

  9. tierra says:

I am finishing my cosmetology license in pa, and my hubby wants to relocate to va. if i take my boards here will i still be able to work in va? and if so, what would i need to do?

  10. jude8753 says:

    Tierra,
Please read this page about Virginia requirments . You will not meet their hour requirements for reciprocity so you would be required to get more hours before you could take boards there. If it were me I would have my school transcripts sent to Va and finish school there and just take one set of boards.

  11. ashley says:

my husband is in the army and will be stationed in new york. i am from illinois is there any possible way to transfer my license since i am not from any of the states that do transfer.

  12. jude8753 says:

    Ashley,

You could contact the NY state board and see if they might consider an exception for military otherwise you would have to take their exams.

  13. Brad says:

I married a Russian Woman who now lives with me in Wisconsin. Her profession in Russia was a Beautician and she wants to also work here in Wisconsin as a Beautician. She has
a diploma from a Beautician School in Omsk, Russia and also has many hours of experience.
I have seen her work and she is very good. Can my wife obtain a license without having to go
through all the time and expense of being retrained for something she already knows? She has her diploma here in the USA and we can have it translated. We have her work history also
when she worked in Russia if it could help. I understand she may have to take the exams which is OK if need be. Thank You.

  14. jude8753 says:

    Brad,
Read this page at the bottom then contact your board there to see how to proceed.

I have my cosmetology license in Michigan, what is the requirements to obtain a license in New York?

  20. Donald A says:

Hey just wanted to make sure that I am correct that SC and NY have reciprocity. By the way great site. Very helpful

  21. jude8753 says:

    Hi Donald,
Unless something was changed this year NY has reciprocity with SC. Glad we can help.

  22. jessica says:

just an update for people moving to Texas.

Texas does have reciprocity with New York, for an “operator” license which allows you to do hair. I am not sure if it also allows you to do nails/facials/etc, but the licensing office was really friendly when I have dealt with them. visit http://www.license.state.tx.us/cosmet/cosmet.htm or call (512) 463-6599 to ask any questions about reciprocity. They seem to grant reciprocity even for states who have less hours required than they do, so it doesn’t hurt to ask. good luck!

  23. David O says:

WASHINGTON DOES NOT ALLOW Reciprocity WITH EVERY STATE…BE SURE TO CHECK ON THEIR WEBSITE IF YOUR STATE IS ON THE LIST. HAWAII FOR SURE IS NOT ON THE LIST

  24. Sharon says:

I have had a operators and a salon owner license in the stste of Indiana and worked and owned a Salon for 5 years but my license expired in the 1980′s as I pursued my college education and changed careers while my children were young. I want to return to Cosmetology again and want to renew my licence in my current state of residence which is Tennessee. Do I need to first renew my Indiana License then presue a resiprocity with the state of Tennessee or can I simply apply my 1500 hours of schooling directly to Tennessee and take the exams in the state of Tennessee.

    YOUR HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED.
    Sharon

  25. sam says:

i am licensed in Fl but now i live in nj what do i have to do in order to be able to work?

  26. gail says:

I am a cosmetology teacher and I have a student who licensed in Utah and would like a NY license. NYS said that there is NO recerprocity… is this correct? In utah there have to complete 2000 hours vs. NY’s 1000 hrs. Thanks a bunch
