Cosmetology Reciprocity For The 50 States/ A-H

September 10th, 2007

Reciprocity of cosmetology license’s for the 50 states. With laws for the different states changing all the time it would be best to check for updates with the official websites of the states listed below.

For information pertaining to transferring credits to a school in another state you should always check with the administrator of your current school and they will guide you and find out any information you would need to make the transfer as simple and smooth as possible or you can contact the state you are planning to move to and get all the information you would need, either call direct or visit their official website and send them an email. If you come from another state licensure in Arizona may be accomplished through license-for-license or by taking an examination. This requires an application for reciprocity and an explanation of licensure requirements. According the Arizona State Board, notwithstanding sections 32-510, 32-511 and 32-512, a person is entitled to receive a cosmetologist license if:

  • They submit to the board an application for a cosmetologist license on a form supplied by the board.
  • They submit to the board satisfactory evidence of either of the following: (a) the person is licensed in another state or country or (b) the person graduated from a school that offers a cosmetology course substantially similar to the requirements of this state and passed the board approved cosmetology examination.
  • Pays the prescribed fees.

For purposes of substantial equivalent requirements under subsection A, paragraph 2 of this section, the board may consider length of work experience in the state in which the person was licensed before applying for a license under this section if the training requirements of that state are less than sixteen hundred hours.

  3. Melissa says:

I went to cosmetology school in New York. I haven’t gotten my New York licence, but I do have my temporary. I live in Connecticut and I would like to work here. I was told that I need to either work for 500 hours in NY, or go back to school for 500 hours in CT to be able to apply for and take my test for my CT lisence. My question is, do I need my NY licence for the 500 hours I worked in NY to be valid? Or can I now apply for my CT licence with proof of the hours I work with just my temporary??

  4. jude8753 says:

Did you take your boards in NY and this is just a temporary till your actual license comes or is this just a permit to work in a salon like an apprentice?

Connecticut says that an applicant who trained in another state, district, commonwealth or territory which required less than fifteen hundred hours of formal education and training, may substitute no more than five hundred hours of licensed work experience in such other state, district, commonwealth or territory toward meeting the training requirement.

If you actually worked for 500 hours in NY and completed school for the 1,000 hours and took your exams then you will have to fill out the forms and have the mgr. of the salon verify your hours and have the school send your certified hours to Connecticut. You can find all the Connecticut information and forms at the link above…I hope this helps. If you need more info contact them directly, all states are different.

  5. jude8753 says:

If you took your boards and passed then a temporary is legal and shows that you are qualified to practice and if you actually worked the hours needed in NY then you should be qualified, however if you did not complete those working hours you would need to finish those hours in Connecticut and take the exam there, but check with the board or a school to see what is required.

  6. Kim says:

My brother has a California cosmotology license and would like to move to Georgia. I see there is not reciprocity between GA and CA. Since the reciprocity law has changed in CA will the law change in GA as well? Could this be waived? What would it take for him to get his license in GA?
    Thanks in advance.
    Kim

  7. Kim says:

    This maybe a duplicate.

My brother has a CA license and would like to move to Georgia. Isee there is no reciprocity between GA and CA. What would it take for him to work in GA?

    Thanks,
    Kim

  8. jude8753 says:

    Hi Kim,
Since California now has reciprocity I would suggest that your brother get in touch with Georgia and see if they now provide the same with California.(478) 207-2440 I would make sure before filling out an application because his money will not be refunded.

They will tell him what he will need to do if they still aren’t reciprocating.

  9. jude8753 says:

    Hello Kim,
I just checked for you and they still don’t reciprocate with California. Your brother will have to take the exams for a Georgia license.

  10. Danielle says:

I am looking into getting my instructors license in MN. Will I need to go through the same thing in another state if I am going to move? Thanks!

  13. jayna knowlton says:

i would like to know how i can transfer my licence to the state of michigan, from the state of washington. i took and passed exams in washington and am now waiting for my licence here in washington. i was wondering can i also at the same time apply for licence in the state of michigan where i am from. thankyou

  14. jude8753 says:

    Hi Jayna,
Read what Michigan says on that page and since Washington State has 1600 and Michigan 1500 you should be able to apply for reciprocity, but you will probably have to wait for your license to come through and go through the process of reciprocation between both states, but you can keep both license so long as you follow renewal laws from the respective states.

You will have to have your certified license from Washington State sent to Michigan in order to start the process

  15. Nicole says:

I am looking to getting my cosmetology liscense but i have a problem….My husband is in the military and the area we are moving to in south georgia doesnt have any programs so the closest place is florida in jacksonville. I see GA doesnt reciprocate with Florida, and for that matter I am in a bind as to whether i should go through with a program in florida and how difficult it would be to transfer my liscense to other states once we relocate again….any suggestions?
    Please HELP.

  16. jude8753 says:

Being in the military and having to move frequently is a problem. Is this a career choice for your husband or just for a certain amount of years? Maybe you could put your training on hold till he’s out of the military, but it basically boils down to how much you really want that type of training.

Each state has it’s own rules for reciprocity and they change frequently, but in all cases depending on whether the states involved comply with reciprocity you would have to send money to your board and request they send your certified hours to the state you are moving to and that usually takes a month give or take.

Then you would have to fill out the application from the state you moved to and send more money and depending on their requirements you may or may not have to take one or both exams which would be more money unless they provide a straight up exchange and that could also take a month or so to get approval.

Most people don’t ordinarily move as much as you do, being in the military, but like I said it depends on how badly you want this. I wish I could have been more help.

  17. Jessica219 says:

Hi ladies I am new here. I think this is what I am supposed to do. I have been licensed in Utah which requires 2000 hours since April of 2007. I am wanting to move down to California. I know they only require 1600 hours so I am ok there, but will I have to take the practical and the written test again?

  18. jude8753 says:

    Hi Jessica,
Nice to meet you, since you haven’t worked 3 years out of the last 5 then the answer to your question would be yes as their reciprocity stands right now.

  19. Tandreotti says:

Hi I have 15 years as a working licienced hairdesser cosemologist do i only pay a fee to the state of florida to be licienced thank you also how long is process

  20. jude8753 says:

    Hello Tandreotti,
When you have your license certified from the state you live in and sent to Fla. you will have to pay for that in your state and when Fla. sends you the application you will then have to pay their fee. I would say the process could take at least 2 months give or take.

  21. Tiffany says:

I have Pa manicurist license for 6 years, now I plan to move to Texas. What do I need to transfer my license ?

  22. jude8753 says:

    Tiffany,
You need to get in touch with the PA state board and have your certified license sent to Texas, you’ll have to pay a fee for that. Then you’ll have to apply to Texas and pay another fee and then they will decide if you can have a Texas license and remember that the fees are non returnable if turned down.

  23. Lindsey says:

I went to school in North Dakota and got my license in 2002. I moved to Delaware, where I’m currently living and I’ve had my license for 3 years here. We are planning on moving to Florida this summer. What do I need to do to get my license there??

  24. jude8753 says:

    Lindsey,
Read about Fla. endorsement . you have to have the your certified license sent to Florida and then you will have to apply and pay a fee and then they will determine your eligibility, simply follow the same procedure as you did from your first move.

  25. karen says:

If I go to school in florida or virgina is there reciprocity in maryland is the test the same if i go to school in florida or va ?

  26. jude8753 says:

    Karen,

Most states are giving the national exams now even PA started that a while back. You would have to contact those states to see if they require that National, but all states teach the basics and everyone learns the same way although the techniques that are taught may seem different and called by different names they are basically the same, but not all tests are exactly the same for instance some may still require you to demonstrate how to make waves and others don’t that’s why it is beneficial to do mock boards in the state you are going to be licensed in.

I’m not sure that answered your question because as stated in your question I wasn’t sure exactly what you were asking me. If you go to school in one of those states they will let you know anything you might ask them about reciprocity with Maryland because rules and regulations change all the time it’s best to make specific questions when you need them from the source in question.

  27. sara says:

I have recently moved to GA from FL will I have to retake the exam? I’ve had my FL licence since July 2004.

    Thanks :)

  28. jude8753 says:

    Sara,
Florida and Georgia do not have reciprocity so yes you need to retake exams.

  29. alison says:

What states allow an east lic. transfer from Michigan?
    North Carolina?

  30. jude8753 says:

    Allison,
I’m not sure I understand what you are asking me. Are you asking if NC reciprocates with Michigan or are you asking about both states with other states?

  31. Jennifer says:

OK, i have a question .. I live in Hawaii right now, my husband is a US Marine … and I found a school but they are not Fed. accredited yet because they are a newer school and I do not want to pay 11-12% interest to go through Sally Mae so is there any other suggestions for loan Co’s ?? They arent going to be accredited until the end of 08 beg. of 09 which means i wont grad til the beg. of 2010 and we will be moving Apr. to possibly california any suggestions and do you know what i would need to do to get my Cali. license??

  32. jude8753 says:

    Jennifer,
Since your husband is in the military try to get a loan though the government they owe you. Don’t go to a school that isn’t accredited the hours will not be accepted. Read This about California qualifications

  33. Sandy says:

I went to school in KS for 1500 hrs in 1989, passed boards and received a licence. I work for a few yrs and then let my licence lapse. Now I live in FL and need to know what it’ll take to get my FL licence. Please help.

  34. jude8753 says:

    Sandy,
You should contact Florida State board of Cosmetology, since you do not have a current, active license and ask them. Go straight to the people that would have the best and current answer for you.

You would have to have your transcripts certified and sent to Fla. and more than likely you would be required to take remedial hours and then you would have to take Fla. state boards.

  35. Bambi Hacker says:

I have a current Ks. barber license but have moved to Oklahoma. Where do I find out if my license will transfer or what I need to do to practice in Oklahoma?

    Bambi,

    Oklahoma :

    Reciprocity

  41. tiffany says:

i live in PA and am not yet done with school, next year i plan on moving to NC and i was doing some research and they require 250 more hours. i saw something about a “reciprocity” which is the transfer of credits. north carolina was not on the pennsylvania list though, what do i need to do?

    thank you.

  42. jess7 says:

i have just been licensed in Flordia and i just moved back home to north carolina i went to school in north carolina and recieved 500 more hours will i have to test in north carolina? is there a way of fighting the board? what do i do?

  43. Julia Meese says:

I currently hold a PA cosmetology and teachers license. Is it possible to retain my PA license and acquire a license through reciprocity to work seasonal in FL? Also, May I pay a license fee and retain two licenses? May I work in both PA and Fl? I have been a salon owner for 36 years. Please email me at my email address and provide any direction you can.

    Thank you
    Julia

  44. stefanie koontz says:

Hi I have a current license in Fl and now live in Ga, what do i need to do to be able to get a Ga license? Can I apprentice in a salon with my Fl license?

  45. How do i know what is needed to take the exams for cosmotology? and how long will it take for me to get an appointment?

  46. jude8753 says:

Araceli the school you go to will prepare you for your state exams. You will have mock boards so you will be prepared and they will tell you what to pack and how to pack it. Length of time depends on the State you are in, but you can always call the boards in your state and inquire.

  47. jude8753 says:

    TO WHOM THIS MAY CONCERN

For those of you that asked questions for the past 2 weeks I was away on a family crisis so therefore your comments weren’t answered. I will try to get around to them, but if you go to the reciprocity section you may be able to find the answers you seek.

  48. ashley says:

If i have my temporary license in NY state, and i want to move to NC will i be able to just take there state boards to get my offical license?

  49. Jimmy says:

    jude8753,

My girlfriend, Jackie, will be licensed in FL soon. She’s worried that she will have to go to school in CA for an additional year in order to be licensed in CA. If I interpreted the information on the webiste “www.barbercosmo.ca.gov”, CA will license her even though there is a 400 hr deficit between FL & CA (1200hrs vs 1600hrs) by accepting out of state licensed experience as hours. I interpreted the website to convey that she will get 100hrs for every three months of licensed out-of-state experience. I think that she will be able to get her CA license after getting her FL license and 12 months of experience in FL (400 additional hrs credit). Am I correct?

    Thank you for your time,

    Jimmy

  50. jude8753 says:

    Jimmy,
She needs to have had her license active for 3 out of 5 years however they normally accept work experience in most states for hourly differences. More than likely she will have to take California’s State boards since she will not have 3 active years, but that is something you will have to find out directly from them. Most states decide each application individualy.

  51. Stormy says:

I recently relocated to Arkansas from Mississippi. I got my manicuring license in 2003 and have had my own nail salon since 2003 also. What will I ned to do to get my license for Arkansas ? Will I have to take any exams or will they do like Texas and count my years of my active salon /manicuring license as hours as well since Arkansas requires more than Mississippi ?

    Thanks

  52. jude8753 says:

    Stormy,
Almost all states will credit work history in lieu of hours needed.

  53. Beth says:

I currently hold a NYS cosmetology license however, I am moving to Pennsylvania, i have had my license for 3 almost 4 years and have been in a salon during that time do I have to take my PA boards or go back to school? Do they have the repriprosity? Thanks.

  54. Beth says:

I was just curious because I know that Pennsylvania needs 1200 hours as where here in NY i only needed 1000

  55. jude8753 says:

    Beth,

I’ve been licensed in Iowa for 7 1/2 years now and will be moving out to the state of Washington soon. When I got licensed in Iowa they did not require us to take the NIC practical exam, just the written and law sections. And I saw that Washington requires proof of passed NIC written and practical exams. Will this mean that I have to take the NIC practical even though I have over 7 years of salon experience?

I AM CURRENTLY LICENSED IN MICHIGAN, BUT I AM PLANNING ON MOVING TO TEXAS. WHAT ARE THE REQUIRED STEPS I MUST TAKE IN ORDER TO TRANSFER MY LICENSE?

  70. Holly says:

I am attending a cosmetology school in New York, but I’m planning to move to Oregon. Oregon requires more hours and seems to have a different system than the rest of the states. I graduate school in June, but the State Board exam isn’t offered until after summer. Once I get my NY license, how do I transfer to Oregon? would I have to work in NY for a period of time and then take the Oregon exam?

    thank you for this website!

Hi, I just got my cosmetology license for California a year ago, and I’m moving temporarily to North Dakota, what do i have to do to work in that state. I’m also border lining Minnesota, there salons in each state…does that mean I have to get something for each state?

  78. Danielle says:

Lots of questions here. I find calling the cosmetology boards I’ve been dealing with (TX and Tenn) is about as satisfying as eating my own hands. I am one month into to waiting on a transfer from texas to tennessee, both requiring 1500 hours. I sent a certificate request and money order to TX a month ago and a notorized request for application to TN two weeks ago. I could have driven it there in an hour. I have been hired pending application, thank God. When I speak to TN, I am put on hold and then assured of a date in the near future that my request “might” be there and to call back then. Texas will not verify that the certificate was sent. Please visit the websites and find out before you move. I am completely licensed to work in Texas, just not in Tennessee. For a month…..

Thankful for my excellent boyfriend but tired of waiting and daytime tv.

I have my Nail technician license and facial specialist license in Florida. I live in Tennessee and they would not reciprocate my licenses . I am thinking about moving to Texas , are they reciprocal to Florida, Of coarse my requiredhours are different now since I have had my licenses for 20 years. I can’t believe Tenn wouldn’t transfer mine. I owned a salon for 5 years, but because I didn’t work for 2 years after I sold my salon, That’s why they wouldn’t unless I went back to school. BACK TO SCHOOL! are they kidding after 20 years in the business?
Can you help? or any suggestions

I live in TN, and am a liscensed cosmetologist here. Next August I will probably be moving to Kentucky because my boyfriend will be stationed there when he returns from Iraq. I got on there State Board website and was a little confused about some to the stuff. I have 1500 hours, they require 1800. But then there was a section that said something about if you are liscensed and working for 2 or more years, regardless of your hours, you are eligable to just take the practical exam. Is this true…In January I will be liscensed for 2 years. Will I still have to complete 300 more hours, or can I just take a practical and transfer my liscense. If you have answers, please let me know, Kristinrampp@yahoo.com THANK YOU!

    Hi,

About 15 years ago, (1995) I completed a 1500 cosmetology course in Texas. Life took a different turn & I never ended up using the license nor did I keep it renewed. I have since then moved to TN & am able to pursue the career I have always wanted. Will I have to go back to a TN school for the entire 1500 hours to receive a TN license?

  102. Rachel says:

    Hi,

I received my license in 1995 in Texas. I never used it or kept it renewed. I have since then moved to TN & finally have the opportunity to pursue a career in cosmetology as a hairstylist. Do I have to go back to school and complete an entire 1500 hour course because it has been so long and I never worked in the field? I’m thinking probably so but the TN State Board line just rings several times and then goes to a busy signal. Thanks in advance for any information you may be able to give me.

i recieved my cos license in MI in november 2007. i have recently moved to Illinois and have been trying to get my license here. i sent all the info, transcripts…however im having a problem between the 2 states as far as Illinois says they need to know what percentage grade i received on my theory bc MI requires 70% or hire to pass and IL requires 75%. I called the state of MI and they say they dont have nor do they offer ur test score(what percentage you got), its pass or fail. They dont care wether you got 93% or73%,as long as its above 70%. I called the state of IL they said they need proof that i passed with a 75% or higher, even though they themselves are also pass or fail, no test scores or percentages. I feel as though im being punished bc its pass or fail. i would understand if i got below a 75%, then i definelty would be inclined to take the test. i think its unfair for people that do well on their tests and passed, but bc the state wont give me my test score to prove i received higher than a 75%, i may have to take the test again for IL. is there anything i can do or anyone i can call and talk to about getting those scores, not having to take the test?
    Thank you,
    Courtney

I came across this website and I feel good about getting some helpful information. :) I am a new Esthestician student in California and will take my State board test here for my California License in March, 2010, however, I am moving to texas next summer after I get my California esthe license and I see they require 750 hours and California requires only 600. WIll I need to make up those hours PLUS take the practical test again since the written is only national? And do you know if Ic an work in texas with a Cali license during a grace period until I obtain my texas license? Thank you!

    • jude8753 says:

Shavone as far as I know you can’t work in any state with another states license and yes you will have to have Texas required hours since you wont have any work experience. Yes, you will have to take their test also. To get the best and most up to date information to your questions you should speak with the admin of your school or contact the Texas Board.

I’m licensed by the state of Maryland and have been for 15 years. I want to practice in NYC. Do I need to retake my written and practical exams to do so?

I’m trying to put myself through school while I work on my Masters. This would be a great opportunity, but if I have to retake the exams then I would have to stay as a Maryland licensee. My course load is too great to study at this time.

    Any information will be helpful.

    Thanks,

I am currently enrolled in cosmetology school in NC. I have completed 1200 hours so far and was wondering can I apply for a NY cometology license which only requires 1000 hours even if I am still in school?
    thank you

    • jude8753 says:

Susan you have to complete the course and for reciprocity they say applicants must be currently licensed by that state and in some instances must have 1 or more years of licensure in order to qualify so you would have to apply to take their state boards when finished with your course and graduate.

Hi, My name is Ginger(Virginia) Griffith. I will be relocating from Florida back to
Tennessee relatively soon and will need to transfer my Fl. license to a Tn. license. I attended Jay Rogers Hair Design Academy in Chattanooga, Tn. In the late sixties. I got my fifteen hundred hours there then had to relocate to Fl. I’ve held a Fl. license since 1969. I also had a Ga.license for several years. I’ve owned my own salon for 30 years. At this point I need to know what the next step is to get my Tn. license. Thanks Ginger

Why do you answer some mail but not all of them? Are the questions not good or do your require more information?

    • jude8753 says:

Casey I’m sorry I am only human and sometimes I get tired of answering the same question over and over when the answer has already been supplied and no one wants to use the search feature to see if it’s already been answered or there is already a post that will give the same information that is being asked. For the best and up to date answers you should always check the state board in which you need an answer from. The list for all the state boards is listed in the side bar. I am only one person and I can’t always answer every comment because time does not permit. I will try to work on that in future. If anyone would like to jump in here and answer a question they see from their state please do, it would be a huge help to everyone.

    • jude8753 says:

Brittany the best thing to do is contact them directly because rules and regulations change frequently from state to state and each candidate is judged on an individual basis. My guess would be that you would need to take their boards, but it’s best to find out directly from them.

To Whomever Hosts this Website: THANK YOU! I fully understand the dedication, time, and know what a PITA running a website can be! Been there, done that! This service you provide is wonderful!

But honestly, some of these questions are ridiculous! And you are really, far too gentle with these airheads. I would not have them working in my salon to sweep floors!

Hairdressers, if you cannot get on the Internet and GOOGLE or SEARCH for your state law and READ for yourself the rules and regulations for yourself, then by God you have no business being in this business or mixing color. Some of you are LAZY! Too lazy to read your own state laws! Some of you act like you do not have a brain in your head to read what you write. I would not trust you to do my hair or my dog’s hair for crying out loud.

God bless you whoever “YOU” are that provides this service to help *us* find information faster about reciprocity, etc… Have a fabulous day! And please, do not delete this note. Let them read it! :)

Hi, i have a question, ; I`m a hair stylist from FL , just move here, i`m not sure what to do , i know that GA doesn`t reciprocate with the state of Fl, what are the steps to follow? do i need to do a apprenticeship program? the application for the reciprocity said that you have to summit proof of training i wonder if is from FL OR? Ga. please help me,
    Thanks!

    • jude8753 says:

Jen: I believe they are referring to your original training, your transcripts and proof of work history. The best thing to do would be to contact the Georgia State Board, they will be happy to answer any specific questions you have. Many states require additional training hours yearly. Usually when there is no reciprocity with the state you are moving to you are required to take their boards in order to get a license from them.

  142. i have decided to go home i can’t make it here so what i gotta do to keep my pa license it has taken me to long to get a n.c. license still i do not have them all i want to do now is go home to pittsburgh,pa how do i do this with out spending more money HELP !!!!!!!!!

    • jude8753 says:

McRae: As far as I know you can be licensed in as many states as you reside and if you are still paying the fees for your PA license then it is still good.

  143. Priyanka says:

    Hi,

My friend has just moved here from another country. she has her native country cosmetology licenese for 7 years. Can she get the cosmetology licenese here without taking written and practical tests? Is any state is offering that kind of reciprocity?

    • jude8753 says:

Priyanka most states do have reciprocity with other countries and many do require testing, but you would have to check your state board for that information and since you didn’t tell me where “here” is I have no clue where to direct you.

  144. Priyanka says:

Thanks a lot for your reply and sorry i didn’t explain clearly. She is in Rhode Island now. But she is ready to move anywhere where she can get her cosmetology license without spending too much time and starts her career asap. Thanks.

    • jude8753 says:

I’m afraid it’s not going to be fast or easy no matter which state she decides on because there are many requirements involved and requirements change often in each state. There are many things she will need to have documented to prove she is here legally, her schooling, plus numerous other things that need to be verified and notarized and it all takes time. Rhode Island does have reciprocity, but many requirements and she would be required to sit for an exam. I honestly don’t have the time to research every states requirements, but the list for the state boards are all listed under pages on the side bar. You can start here with Rhode Island’s requirements it is in PDF format, go down to Section 9.0 Requirements for Applicants from Another Country It should be on page 12. All the best.

  145. Tania says:

I am looking to get my Instructor license, i had half of my hrs in CA and the other half in GA, so I am licensed in GA, what I would like to know is if I get my Instructors License here what states would I be able to teach in. If you have a link for me to continue my search please supply it and I will do the rest.

Thanks and have a blessed day.

    • jude8753 says:

Any state that has reciprocity with Georgia since that is where you are licensed I really can’t point you to any links, but you could do a Google search for “cosmetology instructor reciprocity list” and see what comes up, but I’m sure it’s the same as I have listed here for Cosmetologist. You would have to decide where you are planning to live and then check with their state board. I have all the state boards listed so you can find them easy. Just look on the sidebar under Pages for the list.

  147. Tress says:

I am currently enrolled in a New York State cosmetology course and it will only give me 1000 hours, which is what New York state requires for boards. I live in Pennsylvania and want to get my license there, but they require 1250 hours. My question is if i pass my NY state boards and wish to take my PA boards after that do i have to work 2 years in NY? I don’t mind taking the PA boards after. I know to transfer without taking boards ts requires the 2 years. And if i can just get the required hours some other way? thanks

    • jude8753 says:

Tress…I don’t understand why you live in PA and go to school in NY. Why not just transfer your hours to a school in PA?

I live on the NY PA border and the Ny school is only 15 miles, the closest Pa school is over 65 miles and twice the cost. My question is when i read over the requirements for PA it states to transfer a NY license without taking boards you must have a current license plus 2 years experience it doesn’t say anything about what is required if you posses a NY license and are willing to take the board. it only says to take the boards after cosmetology school you are required 1250. hopefully you understood that lol there has to be some kind of a loop hole or an easy way to get the extra hours.

    • jude8753 says:

Tress….Most states will give a certain amount of credit for working hours so I imagine that’s where the 2 years experience comes in to equal the difference in hours. I know of no loop holes, but I would suggest contacting the board and explain your situation and see what they suggest? Maybe you could apply to the Board for an apprentice permit and get the hours needed that way. Sorry I can’t be more help.

    • AM says:

Hi Tress, u should transfer after u have completed 450 offered hours, not earned hours – this way u will not lose money and u will receive your transcript. You have to understand that NYS is the lowest clock hour state 1000. So other states do not agree to allowing a student to attend NYS cosmetology’s school which mandate only 1000 clock hours and then allow you to take their boards, everyone would attend NYS schools also it would not be fair to the other students who attend that state school.

Call PA’s license department to see what the reciprocity agreement is.

I currently am licensed in Oregon and am thinking of moving to Texas, but need a job first, the catch is I need a Texas license to find one but I need to still work in Oregon until I do. Is it possible to keep my Oregon cosmetology license and get a Texas cosmetology license at the same time? Thanks!

    • jude8753 says:

Kristen…Unless they’ve changed the laws as long as you keep your license up to date you can be licensed in as many states as you want.

  150. Terri says:

I know this question has been visited many times but want to make sure I understand correctly. My FL license is not transferable to GA because there is no reciprocity. What do I need to do to get licensed in GA. (ie. take the exam, complete more hours, both?) thanks for your time.

  151. Amber says:

I am getting my license in South Carolina and then moving to Georgia three months later. In south carolina they give you 600 hours of esthetician training. Georgia requires 1000 hours. Once I move will I be able to recieve a Georgia license without the extra 400 hours education?

    • jude8753 says:

Amber…No you need equivalent hours so you would have to return to school for the hours.

    • Kimberly Laverty says:

Amber, I am licensed in Iowa and Ontario and have been licensed in Florida as well. I have 2100 accredited hours of training and numerous additional courses as well as being a salon owner and having over 20 years experience. I don’t know how one gains more experience than this. I came to Ga from Ontario to be with my sister who passed away from breast cancer. Count on taking the written and practical. There is no rhyme or reason to this system. I feel like the $5000 I spent on training is a complete waste of time money and government resources when I see some of the ignorant that actually work in the field and the work that comes out of some of the salons. I also just learned that it is possible to be handed free points on the exam if the state sees fit. It is not about safety and credentials. It is about money and preferential treatment.

hi there…im thinking of moving from texas to illinois…what would i need to do this? is there a difference in hour requirments? would they even accept my texas hours? please help…

Hi, I tried to search all your comments to see if this had been answered but I don’t think it has. I am still in school, I graduate in 12 days, and I will be moving from Oregon to California. Now everytime I try to call Cali state board I get a client at school, so I haven’t been able to get through. There is no reciprocity in California, so do you know what I would have to do? Just take my boards there and a practical exam? If you could help me out it would be much appreciated! Thank you for your time this website is awesome!

Hi, I have been licensed in NY for 2 years now and have apprenticed here for 4 years, I would like to move to DC but need 500 more hours or 5 years of work experience. So far I only have 4 years in total of work. Ive heard I can apply for reciprocity in another state then transfer to DC who will accept their license. What states share reciprocity with NY and eventually DC? Is this done? Does DC have a website that I can apply through? Ive contacted their agency and they have not contacted me. I would really like to do all of this online. Should I contact my school, if so do they send a letter to me then I fill out some sort of application, and where do I get this application? This is all very hard to figure out, please help me out. Thanks.

hi! i keep hearing about some universal license you can get if you are licensed in 3+ states. rumor is, if you are licensed in 3 or more states, there is a license you can somehow obtain to be able to work in any state without taking any exams. is this true? if so, how does it work, and why can not find any information on it?

    • jude8753 says:

jenae…Each state has different requirements and I haven’t heard of a Cosmetology universal license, although that doesn’t mean there isn’t one. Of course if you’re an ESTHETICIAN you can take the cidesco certification course, which is accepted in 36 states. You can always check with your state board to find out the facts. I know Dentists ( http://www.thewealthydentist.com/SurveyResults/134-National-Dental-Licensure.htm) and other fields are fighting for one. Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful.

Hi!! I am currently attending school in Ohio for my Cos Mgmt License, I am getting pretty close to the 700hr mark. I have to complete 1800 hours. Me and my husband are going to be moving to Arizona soon, and my question is, would it be smarter just to finish out the 1800hrs and take the State Board here in Ohio, or would it be better just to try and get my hours transferred to a school in AZ and finish out there? We will only be living in AZ as of now for a year before we move again. Hope that’s not to confusing.
    Thanks!

Hi I have a question about Cosmetology examination in Michigan.
I registered on 1-6-2011 and I took my practical test on 1-4-2012 after passing my practical test I registered to take my Theory examination 1-5-2012 which is next day. I failed my theory exam and now i have to retake it. but they are not letting me retake it since my eligibility expired 1-6-2012. I called State of MI and they looked through my files and they told me if i passed my practical before my expiration date, i have a whole year to take my theory and pass it. Is this true or does this mean i have to re-take my practical and theory test all over again?

    Thank you.
