I am going to make a post related to a couple other post I have done on hair and I have them listed at the bottom if you want to go back and read them. Personally I found the study of hair exciting. I will be adding some terms in this post taken from my notes at beauty school.
- Trichology: The study of hair which is an appendage of the skin, but is absent of nerves.
- Layers of the hair:
- Cuticle -Is the outer transparent, scaly part that protects the cortex.
- Cortex-Is the largest inner layer or middle part. This is what gives the hair strength and elasticity and this is the ability to stretch and bounce back 50% wet and 10% dry. The cortex is also the part that contains the pigment called melanin that gives hair color.
- Medulla- Is the core or central part that holds the pith or marrow, round cells but not everyone has it. It may be absent in people that have fine and very fine hair.
- Follicle-Is a tube like inversion through which the hair grows to reach the surface of the skin.
- Root-Lies within the follicle below the skin.
- Shaft or stem-Is the part that grows above the skin.
- Arrector (Pili)-Is a muscle on the underside of the follicle and this is what makes the hair stand up on end. It gives the hair a charge.
- Sebaceous- Are oil glands and overactive glands produce dandruff. There are usually 1 or more glands attached to each root.
- Sebum – Which is produced by the sebaceous gland is an oily natural secretion which gives luster and pliability and keeps your skin supple and soft. this production is influenced by diet, blood circulation, emotional disturbances, endocrine glands, and drugs.
- 3 main structures of the root:
- Bulb-Lower part of the root.
- Papilla-Is the Mother of hair this is where all the nourishment flows through to the hair
- Follicle-Is the tube depression that encases the root of the hair.
- Hairstream- Is when the hair follicles flow in the same direction.
- Natural Part- Is when 2 hairstreams slope in opposite directions.
- Whorl- Is when hair grows in a circular motion like on the crown.
- Cowlick- Is when a tuft of hair stands up on any part of the scalp.
- Keratin- Is the protein found in horny growths and that includes nails and skin.
Long hair is for adornment and protection and the technical terms for the hair on different areas of the body are as follows:
- Barba- The face
- Capilli- The head
- Cilia- The eyelashes- protect from dust and light glare.
- Supercilia- The eyebrows -short or bristly divert sweat.
- Lanugo- Is the soft downy hair on the face and the rest of the body and it helps the evaporation of perspiration.
There are 3 main hair shapes: straight which is round, wavy which is oval, and curly or kinky which is almost flat. Anyone regardless of their race or nationality can have straight, wavy or curly follicles. I have kinky- wavy hair and believe me it has caused me grief all my life. Humidity deepens natural waves, heat causes hair to swell and expand and absorb moisture and cold air contracts hair. I hate cold, but at least my hair behaves better.
I have tried many ways to take the frizz out and spent lots of money on different products, but I have to tell you that for my hair the best thing I have found is the hair serum Frizz-Ease by John Frieda. It’s not perfect, but at least it helps me control a lot of the awful frizzes and it makes it a lot easier to get the tangles out after a ride on the bike.
