Are You A Wannabe Kitchen Beautician For Your Children?

July 13th, 2007

Okay so you’ve decided it’s time for your child’s first hair cut, do you do it yourself and save money or take them to a barber or hairstylist? If you opt for the professional cut then make sure that you explain everything to them before getting there. Show them the shears and explain that they are used for trimming. Cut a small piece of your hair so they can see that it doesn’t hurt.

If you have clippers at home start them up and let the child hear the humming noise. The children I used clippers on seemed to like the humming. Show them the attachments and let them know that they cannot get hurt with the attachment on.

Find a professional that is good with children and has a lot of patience and can work with speed. Ask your friends who they take their children to and get some recommendations. I know the children we serviced loved coming to the shop. We had a special area just for kids with lots of toys and things to do. They need to stay occupied until it’s their time if you didn’t make an appointment before hand.

Always treat children with respect and ask them interesting questions. At times it was necessary for the mother to be draped and hold the child in her lap who was also draped. Make sure the child is well rested and not moody that will make for a very unpleasant experience for all concerned. You can always bring him back another day. If he is very difficult you could always see if the salon provides at home services, sometimes children feel better in their on environment.

Children love the big mirror that is in front of them, they are fascinated with looking at themselves and watching everything around them. Most children have a favorite toy let them take that to hold onto under the cape it comforts them. Most salons give treats and the children always love coming for those, our kids always knew where we kept them and headed straight for their treat when they were done. Just like my pupper, he always has to have his treat when he comes in and will never let you forget it.

If you decide your going to be the kitchen beautician for your children and save money follow the same distractions as above. Turn on the cartoons, that always pacifies our grandson, he never even knows we are around when he watches animation. You need to have something high enough for your child to sit on so you will not strain your back by bending over a lot and you will be better able to judge if you are getting the hair straight. If it’s a nice day you may consider trimming the hair outside.

Have the hairstyle already planned out with your child that way they feel like they are involved in the project. Children have very fine hair because this is not their permanent hair. If your child has blond hair every little mistake will show. Try to create a simple cut that will be easy to maintain. If your using clippers be very careful because the guard can slip off when you least expect it and you may be faced with a situation of blending a lot shorter than you thought. Not everyone can blend especially if they do not know the techniques of blending. Remember your children like to look good too and no child likes to have other children laugh at them.

If your doing just a trim try to start with the bangs first that way the eyes will at least be able to see encase you are not able to finish the rest. There are lots of bang styles and they are not always as easy to do as one might think.Pick up a book with instructions and pictures before you start cutting your children’s hair. Always remember when hair is wet it stretches 40%-50% of it’s length so decide before hand how much you want to cut. Better to take off too little than too much with little girls. Girls and even women have a hard time letting go of their hair even if it’s just an inch.

If your good with angles and know how things will fall you should have no problems and even if you do I’m sure a good beautician can fix it. Once you are done with the cut put your shears away because no cut is ever perfect. You will always find one piece that should be going some where else and the more you pick at something the worse it will get. Do not keep saying wait a second I need to get this piece. When I first started practicing on my friends I had to literally stop myself from following them around with my shears.

Did you know the Flowbee is still being made and for a small  investment you will be amazed that it does work. You may have to clean up around the ears for boys and men and it does make a racket since it is attached to your vacuum, but it will save lots of mistakes you might make and the cost of those beauty shop visits and no hair all over the place.
