Physical Properties of Hair-Things You Learn In Beauty School
While studying hair and learning all the basics some of which I touched on yesterday. There is still much more like learning the physical properties of the hair which I will touch on now:
- Absorption- When substances pass easily through or into the hair.
- Hygroscopic- The ability to absorb and retain moisture. The maximum amount of water the hair will retain is 30%.
- Desorption- When water passes out of hair.Hair is reluctant to release moisture.
- Adsorption- Referred to as build-up. When substances adhere to the outside of the hair like oil, fat and wax.
You will learn product knowledge and which product to use for the type of hair you are working on so you will be able to make a professional recommendation, but always listen to your customer and know what their wishes are before hand. Never ever just do as you please unless your customer has given you the okay.
You will learn the proper techniques on how to drape a client for the different services you will be preforming in the salon, or in the clinic when you are in school and they must be followed. Good sanitation must always be practiced we do not want to spread diseases. When doing your examination before any service for a client if you notice anything unusual or something doesn’t look right please refer them to their doctor to make sure everything is okay before you proceed with any service. Never perform any service on anyone with lice.
You will then get to the fun part of learning how to hold your shears properly (We never referred to them as scissors) and which combs to use for different types of things. Plus you will be learning about proper sanitation, which is all important when dealing with the public. We will learn about the different types of brushes and the purpose of each like:
- Natural Bristles- These are made from animal hair( usually boar because the structure is similar to human hair. These are recommended for regular hair brushing.
- Synthetic bristle- These are man made and usually made of nylon used for smoothing the hair and comb outs.
You should brush the hair prior to shampooing because it loosens debris such as (oil, dirt, and dead skin cells). If the hair is weak, fragile, or thin do not brush, just massage and comb the hair. Tomorrow I will write about thinking and seeing as a designer learns to do.

I hope you can throw in some tips and tricks with regards to giving a haircut, especially to kids.
I have done lots of children haircuts and they are some of the most difficult. Children can be very restless and squirmy.
I had one family that came in with their kids and one child would not let us sweep up his brother and sisters hair. Apparently he had bags of his siblings hair at home and he would also eat it, no one else could have it.
I will give all the knowledge I have about giving children’s haircuts, but actually the best thing as a parent would be to take him for a big boy or big girl hair cut and get them use to it.
Things will go better for you in the long run when you decide to cut their hair if they feel like you know what you are doing and you are observing what the cosmetologist is doing.
Actually since you are so close to them it is easier for a stranger to keep them still and control them because they know how to play You. Sorry, but that had to be said.
Ha ha. Actually I want to cut my kids’ hair to save some bucks. A mom has to do what she can do to cut on expenses.
That’s all well and good and I also cut my son’s hair and he hated me for it, even though I gave him what he wanted years ago to look like Kojack. Better to pay the few bucks and let him hate someone else.
