Cosmetology Hour Requirements For 50 States
The State Boards are very strict in all states and when you visit any of the state board sites you will usually find the mission statement like the one from the PA state board site below. You must follow all state board laws of sanitation. You can be fined heavily and shut down and according to any offense may spend some time in jail.
Mission Statement:
The State Board of Cosmetology regulates the practice and licensure of estheticians; nail technicians; cosmetologists and teachers of cosmetology; and cosmetology salons and schools in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Board promulgates and enforces regulations for the examination and licensure of applicants to practice or teach cosmetology and to manage schools of cosmetology. The Board also issues apprentice permits in appropriate circumstances as well as licenses to perform nail technology only or practice esthetics only. The Board prescribes disinfection standards to be followed to prevent the creation or spread of infectious diseases.
You must display your license so clients can see it. If they have any complaints it is very easy for them to report you and believe me the board will check you out throughly and make sure everything is up to code and all rules and laws are being carried out.
Below I have listed the hours required in order to get your license from each state. You must have a valid license in order to practice. If you are planning on moving to another state you will need to check with that state board to find out if they have reciprocity.
Reciprocity deals with being able to transfer credits or experience if you attend beauty or cosmetology school in one state and then wish to work in a different state. Depending on the state and school, you are usually required to take additional courses and tests in order to be legally licensed to work in a state other than the state where you attended school. Each state is different so always check all the requirements from the state you are interested in.

I’m a student at a hairdressing academy in Hutchinson, Kansas. Can I transfer my hours to Noble School of Cosmetology or Toni and Guy Hairdressing Academy in Colorado Springs since I’m moving there?
Hello Abbey,
Speak with the administrator of your school and tell her/him the situation about your impending move. They will be able to check with the school that you wish to attend and see if your hours from Kansas will be credited. You will have to have them send your records anyhow or you can contact the schools below by calling and see if they will accept the hours you have already accrued in Kansas or use the urls provided to send a message to the individual schools. Colorado does not have reciprocity, we have endorsement and everyone who holds an active license in another state may apply for endorsement and everyone is reviewed on an individual basis.
I’m currently a student in ID, but would like to move to the San Diego, CA area sometime in 2008(I graduate in march 2008 and would not move until after I graduate). What would I have to do to obtain my license in CA?
If you are planning on doing your boards in California instead of Idaho You will need to download this form in pdf. and follow all instructions. If you need further assistance I suggest you call them directly. For licensing information you may contact the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology at (916) 574-7570. They will be able to supply more information for you.
Since the Gov. passed the reciprocity ruling this year it is a lot easier for cosmetologist to get their license transfered now instead of being tested if they have worked 3 out of 5 years they do not have to be re-examined for California.
If I recieve my nail tech licence in Tennessee can I use it in Alabama? or do I have to re take the board test?
Hello Lakeishia,
Tenn. is only 600 hours and Alabama is 750 so you would have to have the equivalent hours and they say If you have been licensed less than five years or have not passed a board approved exam, you may be required to pass both a practical and written exam. So if your moving to Alabama just have your hours transfered to a new school and take the exam in Alabama because since you haven’t taken boards why take them in 2 states?
i am currently taking college classes in nebraska i was wondering if i decided to go to colorado when i hit my 1450 hrs would they reconize thoes hours or not?
Hello Kristina,
You will have to have your school send your certified hours to Colorado. Simply talk to your admin. and they will tell you everything you need to know.

I have my cosmetology license in MI and have an extra 200-250 hrs. I am trying to figure out how to get licensed in the state of GA. I just moved to Savannah and I want to figure this out.
Hi Shannon,
I’m not sure I understand what you are referring to about the extra hours. Mi and Ga have the same hour requirements.
The information below will help you. The second is the form you would fill out and send to the state boards in Ga. Submit that form to Georgia State Board of Cosmetology, Post Office Box 13446, Macon, Georgia 31208

Thank you,
Annette
Hi Annette,
I doubt that you will have to go back to school. More than likely you will down load their proof of work experience and have the appropriate person fill it out. Your working history will probably be allowed as credit for the hours, but you will have to check with them to make sure.

Hello. I have been working with the Kansas Board of cosmetology for over 3 months now. I want to Become a permanent makeup technician. All I want to do is go to school and start my own practice. They say I have to go to a school in Kansas. But there are not any school in Kansas. They say I can go to an out of state school. But they tell me they have NEVER approved an out of state school. I sent information to them about a school, and after 4 weeks I got a letter telling me to closely review ks. law 69-15-12. (that law is about renewing a liscense.)I have spent many afternoons on the phone with these people and it seems they are trying to block my every move. I just want them to tell me what school I CAN go to and they wont. Do you have any Ideas on what I should do? Thank you for your time Al Hastings
Hi Allen,
The best I can do right now is to give you this site and tell you to get in touch with this person since she lives and practices in Kansas. I think she will be able to provide the information you need.

I have 1725 hours in cosmetology from NC, I have not taken the state board examiner test, what do I have to do to get my license in Baltimore Maryland
Hi Yvonne,
This is usually what you would find on most sites: Contact the state board office in which your training was acquired, and request that a certification of your training (affidavit) be mailed directly to the office of whatever State Board of Cosmetology.
Certification must provide the name of school attended, city and state in which school is located, and number of hours earned.
I couldn’t find the information you need on their site so I sent them an email and probably wont hear back till Mon. or Tue.,But I am assuming you would be able to take their state boards if you have your hours certified and sent to Maryland boards, although some states insist students take boards from the state they graduated in first. I’ll have the answer next week, but if you would like to send your own email please do. cos@dllr.state.md.us.
or you could find out from the director of your school.

i have my liscense in NJ and im moving to MI, how do i go about transfering my liscense?
Hi Deserae,
The information you need is here.
You will first need to contact your state board and see if you can have your hours certified and sent to MI online or if you have to send them a letter with the required fee, license number, social security and which state you are moving to. I didn’t see a certification application on their site so you should call them directly or e-mail them for the details you need. then MI would get in touch with you and either send you the application or direct you to their site for further information: NJ- (973) 504-6400. You may also send your questions via e-mail to askconsumeraffairs@dca.lps.state.nj.us.
I’m from Massachusetts and I recieved my permit to get my hairdressing license, obtaining 1000 hours on June 2, 2007. Now that it’s almost December, I’m wondering if I’m able to obtain my license, or have I ran out of time? Do I have to go back to school, or am I losing hours??
Hi Susan,
I would say you have time, but I just sent an e-mail to check if hours expire in your state. I have checked with numerous states for this information and the ones that answer me back with specifics I then post it on beauty hours expiration.
You can call the school you graduated from to get this information a lot quicker and they are always happy to help their graduates in anyway they can.
Massachusetts reported back that as long as you graduated, you never lose your hours.
Hi, My husband is in the military and we are moving from Texas to Florida. How do I transfer my liscene and I would like to go back to school for esthetician, how many hours does Florida require?
Hi Kimberly,
Texas asks that you send a $ 15.00 money order and request a certified transcript of hours. In the letter, specify where the transcript needs to be mailed. You would need to give pertinent information like your name, license number, social security number.
Here is the Faq pdf for Florida it should answer all your questions. As far as I can tell it would be 265 hours to become a facial specialist.
If you check the sitemap, very last section is on reciprocity. There maybe other answers to questions listed there that anyone might have. I have been trying to segment some of the same questions that are being asked into their on post so people can find them easier instead of going through a lot of comments
Hello, I have been a licensed cosmetologist in Ohio (1500 hours) since 1999. My license has been in good, active standing since then.
I want to move to California (1600 hours).
-Do I need to take the additional 100 hours of classes?
-Do I need to take the written and/or oral exam?
-Is it possible to have both OH and CA licenses or once I transfer it to CA it is only usable in CA? Or can I have dual licenses?
Thank you!! xoxo
Hello Julie,
You are allowed to keep both license so long as you pay your renewal fees. Your experience would make up for those hours. Read this page for more information and forms you can download. California Reciprocity Faqs
I am a student in South Carolina and will be graduating in the spring of 2008. I was planning on testing for certification in South Carolina.
However, I will be moving to Alabama after graduation. I want to be certified in South Carolina and I would like to also get my certification in Alabama.
What do I need to do?
Kayla,
In order to get your license in Alabama by reciprocity you would have to show 5 years of experience and since you don’t have that you would have to take their exams.
You should talk to the director of your school and explain your circumstances and see how they can help you. You would have to take the exams in South Carolina to get your license for that state, but like I said above you will have to pass Alabama’s also.
I have been licinsed working cosmetologist in Texas for nearly 10yrs. I am moving to California and am curious about the particulars of transfering my license. Is there a chance I will need to retest? What is the time frame I’m looking at? I appreciate any info you can give me.
Hi Alicia,
Read this page for more info. There are forms on that page you should read and follow instructions. You will have to go through the process of getting your lic verified through your state and having certification sent to the state you are moving to, That could take up to 30 days. Then the process with Calif. could take as long give or take.
If I were you I would send an e-mail to the state board in Calif. and ask them, just to be on the safe side because things change all the time from state to state.
Hi,
Im planning to move to Florida in july, and i have my new york state license in cosmetology!! How do i get my NY license to transfer to florida…Do i have to have more hours? Or just take the test again? If you could let me know everything that would be great!! Thank you!
Melissa,
This is NY reciprocity list and Florida isn’t on it so you would have to take the state boards in Florida unless they have changed, but I would get in touch with them directly because as stated in other posts state laws and requirements change constantly.
Since you live in NY call your state board directly and see if anything has changed. They will tell you how to proceed with certifying your hours. If nothing has changed then you would have to follow Florida laws if their schools will not accept your certified school hours from NY. It’s best to check with these 2 state boards for the best information.
NY has 1000 and Fla 1200 if they had reciprocity your working hours since having your license would make up the extra hours needed.

Since the Georgia exam is only so many times a year…if I am moving from California & am already licensed, am I able to work in a salon until my exam date????
My answer would be no since Georgia does not reciprocate with California, your license would not be legal in Georgia.
I am trying to figure out how to move to Savannah Georgia.
I currently have a hairstyling only license in Colorado, and have been working for about six months in that field.
Do I need to go back to school here and get the whole cosmo licensure?
If so, does that then transfer to Georgia?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Marla Stone.
My wife has is certified in the state of Illinois, we are moving to San Diego in January. I see that she needs an additional 100 hours of school in order to become certified in CA.
She has only been certified for 2 years. So, she does not qualify for reciprocity, correct?
What steps do we need to make in order to find an accredited Cosmetology school in order to me CA requirements?
We will need transcripts sent to the new school?
Also, she stopped working 6 months ago, and her IL license expired in Sept.
Thanks for your help!
I’m currently licensed in PA and currently moving to Florida how would I go about transferring my license to Florida and what are the requirements. Please contact me back and let me know
Licensed in Florida in 2001, now moving to North Carolina. Reciprication requires a letter of certification from Florida. Florida says send in $25 plus a letter and wait for 45 working days and they will send one out.
I’m dizzy.
Who can wait 1/6th a year for a letter to be sent out then gosh knows how long for NC to review the app and mail my license or any school required?
Tell me how I can get to work faster.
Hello Lost in space… as far as I know there is no faster way, you have to go by the rules and regulations of the respective states.
Joe,
Since her license is not in good standing and she has not worked 3 out of 5 years then reciprocity would not be eligible.I would suggest that you contact them directly at

Since laws and rules change constantly from State to state it is always best to find out straight from the horses mouth instead of relying on someone that may have outdated information.
They will be able to tell you about getting her certified hours sent to them so you would be able to proceed with the best course of action and enrolling in school if her work history does not qualify for the extra hours needed in order to take their state boards..Good Luck
Amy,
Pennsylvania and Florida do not have reciprocity as far as I know unless something has changed recently. So you would have to take Florida’s state boards, but contact them for the best information.

Since you do already have a license for hairstyling you could check and see if you could have that license certified and sent to them and finish your education for the remaining part of the curriculum hours in Georgia to take their state boards for the whole cosmetology course.
Every state is different so it’s always best to check with them directly.

I attend school in Pennsylvania. My sister just got a job offer in North Carolina and in Nevada. Since PA only requires 1250 hours, how would I be able to get the extra 250-550 hours inorder to practice in either of those states?
Hi Lauren,
You would need to get a transcript of your hours and depending on which state you move to you would have to get the remaining hours needed at a school in the state where you move.
When your sister makes her final decision speak with the director of your school and they will help you to transfer your hours to the state board that you move to so you can finish your course. You may be able to get an apprenticeship to finish your hours and make money at the same time.
My husband is in the Coast Guard and we move around about every 3 years. Its about that time again and where ever they send us next I want to go to Cosmetology school.I guess what I would like to know is does every state let you transfer all the hours from another state? Or is it like college and only certain approved hours transfer to the new state? I don’t mind making up the difference in the hours as long as what i have already done will always count the next place we go. I have been wanting to do this for a very long time, Im just trying to figure out how well it will fit into a military life style.
Hi Krista,
At this point in time not all schools in the different states will accept and have reciprocity, but most do. Some states also require you to take the state board test in the state you went to school.Every state constantly changes rules and regulations so you never know what could happen. It would be nice if every state were the same, but they aren’t.
I moved from New York about 3 years ago. I have a NY cosmotology license but it expired in 2006. I want to find out how I can transfer my license to Florida. Should I renew my NY license. where do I find the renewal application for NY. Thanks
Hi Yvonne,
You do know that Florida isn’t on New York’s Reciprocity list, but this is what Florida says:
The board shall adopt rules specifying procedures for the licensure by endorsement of practitioners desiring to be licensed in this state who hold a current active license in another state and who have met qualifications substantially similar to, equivalent to, or greater than the qualifications required of applicants from this state.
If I were you I would call the Florida Board 850-487-1395 (phone) and ask them if they endorse and will honor a NY license if they do not then you would have to take the state boards in Florida to get your license, but as stated above you must have a current active license.
NY mailing addresses: I couldn’t find any information for reinstating your license on their official site so I would suggest you get in touch with them to find out how to get reinstated.
I have a ga cosm.licence what do i do to get a florida.lic. can i keep my ga lic. to?I am going to be living in flo. only 3 or 4 months out of the year but i would love to do hair while i am there for extra money.
Hi Robrin,
You would have to apply to take Florida’s state board exams since there is no reciprocity. You should also check to see if there are any new updates on the official site since rules and regulations change frequently.
When applying for reciprocity with other states you can always keep your other license as long as you keep it renewed.
Hello,
I have a colorado nail tech license and a colorado estetician license and am currenting attending school in COLORADO for HAIR .I may be possibly moving to Macon Georgia and wanted to know if Georgia will accept my licenses Or Licence.
I am going to switch all licences for a cosmo license in the state of Colorado then hopefully switch it out to Georgia.
I did 350 hours nails
600 Estetician
and howeer many I have to do for hair in order for me to get a cosmo license. Please forward any info u may have on this thank u.
Lisa
Georgia has a 1500 requirement and Colorado 1450 so you will need at least 50 more hours to meet their requirement. If you have any work history I’m sure they would take that into consideration. The only states that Georgia will not reciprocate with are California, Florida, Hawaii or New York, but all others will be granted or denied on an individual basis.
Can you have license in two different states?, I live within just a few short miles of SC in NC and have opportunity to work part time in both.
Hi Kym,
As Far as I know as long as you keep your license renewed and paid up you can be licensed in as many states as you want.
My license expired in 1994. I need to know how can I renew it or do I go back to school and complete the 1500 hours required by the state of Florida
Hi Evy,
Florida says that your hours never expire, so you don’t have to worry about losing them. Just don’t lose your transcripts encase you have to prove your hours.
Than you Jude for your promt response. Willl I have to take the state board exam again tell me please.
Evy,
You will find information on page 7 of this document about reapplying . You can also find information about higher education providers on this document.
You should check with Your state board for more information. The contact information is provided on the document also.
I have graduated cosmetology school in 1993, I have 1500 hrs, a letter with the schools seale on it. I failed the test twice and never tried again. I want to try to take the test and get my license in MD what do I have to do.
Michelle,
Some states specify after several failures you have to have a certain amount of retraining before you would be eligible to retake the exams. I couldn’t find the information on their state site so I suggest you get in touch with the school you graduated from and ask them what the requirements are after 15 years that you will need to address. I know if it were me I would definitely need a refresher course. That is a big problem, over the years you naturally forget things and the rules and regulations and so many other things change in just a year so like I said it’s very simple to pay a visit to your old school and get all the up to date info that you need.
I have a managing cosmetologist license in the state of Ohio, I have had my license for almost 4 yrs. and may be moving to California soon and was wondering what I would be envolved in doing that?
Kim,
The board shall grant a license without examination to practice to an out of state applicant if the applicant submits all of the following to the board:
(a) A completed application form and all fees required by the board. (b) Proof of a current license issued by another state to practice that meets all of the following requirements: (1) It is not revoked, suspended, or otherwise restricted. (2) It is in good standing. (3) It has been active for three of the last five years, during which time the applicant has not been subject to disciplinary action or a criminal conviction.
I have requested a Certification from the State with which I hold a current license be sent directly to the California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology. If I were you I would give them a call to make sure of all their laws.

Jules,
I am not familiar with the schools out there, but I would suggest you contact the board. The phone number and contact info is in the comment above and get a list of the accredited schools where you are. You will have to complete the hours and take their state boards because your license hasn’t been active for three of the last five years.
Would anyone know what book I would need to study for the NJ State Boards to pass the manicure exam ?

I went to the Aveda Institute in NYC and just moved to Texas. I haven’t yet taken the test in NY to get my license, but was going to fly back to do so,(This comment and my answer were moved toTexas reciprocity)
Jocarole,
You will have to show proof of higher education so more than likely you will be required to take a refresher course before you could be reinstated. If I were you I would contact the NJ board and find out exactly what their requirements are now so you will be prepared.
Hello !
I am french and i have a cosmetologic lisence for michigan. I am thinking of moving in florida. Obviously florida need less hours than michigan. Would i still need a proof of the hours to get a lisence for florida ? I am asking it because i did those hours in france and i don’t have this proof anymore. I will have to ask the school in france and that would be complicated .
Hello Pierre,
This is what Florida says: You are eligible for a Florida license by endorsement if you have a current and active license in another state, with the requirements of the other state being equal to or greater than the requirements of Florida cosmetology students. Florida cosmetology applicants are required to have 1,200 school hours and pass a licensing examination.
If you meet those requirements, you are not required to take the Florida cosmetology examination. However, if your initial hours of study were completed abroad, you are not eligible for endorsement you must apply by examination.
You can contact Florida and see if they will consider you because of your license in Michigan, but as you can see from their response above your school was abroad so you would have to take their exams, but since you have a Michigan lic. they should have your proof of hours from abroad from your application proof when you applied with them.
I currently live in oklahoma and am planning to move to LA soon. I have had my liscense for almost 2 years. Will I have to take the state board again in California? What do i need to do to be liscensed there? Thanks
Hi Kaylee.
You need to have had your license for 3 years then you wouldn’t have to take their boards. For more info read this page about California reciprocity.
I’m apprenticing at a hair salon and I’ve put in about 7 months. turns out im moving to virginia, so would those hours that i have already done transfer over into a beauty school? And, do i have to pay a fine to my salon?
Hi Jenn,
Your hours should be turned into the state board where you live so if I were you I would find the contact information I have listed for all the state board sites and send them an e-mail or call them to make sure your hours were turned in and documented because you would have to have those hours certified by your state board and sent to Virginia.
Most states will reciprocate student hours or apreticeship hours, but you need to check for sure. As for the fine you are talking about I really don’t know because all states are different. You should read the paperwork that was supplied to you from the salon or check with your state board for better advise on your rules and regulations.
I have my Skin care license in Florida and want to get a license for NYC. I have been been working in Floirda for over 5 years and have 300 hours. My question is can I take a test and get licensed in NYC. I recall seeing something on the NYC state website that if you have over 5 years expeience in skiincare and an active license you can apply for a license in their state w/out taking the 600 hours of schoooling they require – is that accurate?
Debbie,
Florida isn’t on NY’s Esthetician Endorsement List , so you would have to take the boards there. You should check to see if they will give credit for your school hours and your 5 years working history. My advice would be to contact them by phone or e-mail . It’s always best to contact the state board directly.NY Contact Information

hi! i graduated from a cosmetology school in colorado in 2004. i completed all my hrs and was eligible to take my state board test. unfortunatly i got side tracked and never took the test. i am wondering if i can still take the test and/or if i need to take a refresher course. i looked at the state board website but i cant find any info!!! please help!!!
Hi Melissa,
I found this on their site which you can read for yourself here Page 17
“Any applicant enrolled in a training program prior to July 1, 2004, shall have until June 30, 2007 to satisfy the clock/contact hour requirement in section (A) above. Failure to complete the program by June 30, 2007 will require the applicant to convert his/her training into credit hours and complete any deficient credit hours before being eligible to apply for licensure.”
Since you did finish all your hours I interprete from the above that you can apply to take your boards, but if it were me I would take like a 40 hour refresher just encase you forgot alot of stuff and redo the mock boards so you know what to expect. Contact them directly for the most accurate information. mailto:registrations@dora.state.co.us
ok, thank you so much for the info!!!!! : )
Meliissa,
You are very welcome and I hope everything works out for you.
I’m a student in California and moving to Virginia. I should have the 1500 hours required for Virginia before I move, how would I go about applying for a test in Virginia?
Thank you
Hi Martha,
You can find the answer to yourcomment here.
I am a licenced cosmetologist and have been out of the business for about 12 years, I would like to get some additional training for new style that have been out since I have been in the busuness because I plan on going back into this line of work this summer. Is there any type of course that I can take in Michigan in my area Livonia Michigan 48150.
I am also going to be a snow bird and be traveling to Florida possibly for the summer and would like to work at a salon in Florida 6 months out of the year what do I need to do to be able to hold a licence in Michigan and Florida ?
Carolyn,
You need to contact your state board and ask them about courses being offered in your area.
You would have to apply for endorsement Fla states that “You are eligible for a Florida license by endorsement if you have a current and active license in another state, with the requirements of the other state being equal to or greater than the requirements of Florida cosmetology students.
Florida cosmetology applicants are required to have 1,200 school hours and pass a licensing examination. If you meet those requirements, you are not required to take the Florida cosmetology examination. However, if your initial hours of study were completed abroad, you are not eligible for endorsement you must apply by examination.
If you have a current and active license in another state based upon completion of 1,000 school hours you can attend (in or outside of Florida) any cosmetology school to obtain the additional 200 educational hours to qualify for endorsement. In addition, you must provide proof of passing a state written examination”
So long as you pay the renewal fees in your state you can have both. You would have to have your certified license sent to Florida by your state board and then apply for a fla license. If your license isn’t in good standing and is null you would have to pass their state boards.
hello, i am in Arthur Angelo school currently studying cosmetology in Rhode Island. The state requirements are a completed 1500 hours…i am somewhere around 800 and have decided i would rather obtain my barbers liscense instead of cosmetolgy. Would you happen to know if i can transfer my cosmo hours to a local barber school? I was thinking they would have to recognize my hours to some degree…i hope!
Hi Anthony,
Since both barbers and cosmetologist have to learn the same basics I would say you could transfer to a barber course and have your hours carried over. I advise you to talk to the admin. of your school. They are always willing to help their students. I’m not sure how the financing would work out, but they will be better able to advise you or you could contact your state board directly for more detailed instructions. At any rate Good-Luck
thanks jude!
I currently live in NJ where I had recieved my license for cosmetology. I have had my licenses for almost 2 years and I am possibly moving to North Carolina. I know they require more hours so I am pretty sure that I will have to go back to school since NC requires 1500, and NJ is only 1200. I was wonder what, or who do I need to contact and if I need to take the stateboard AGAIN!
Kate,
Click the link to find the information you seek about North Carolina Reciprocity. As far as I know all states will accept employment hours in lieu of extra credits needed, but they have to be verified or certified from your employer and sent to the state you are moving to.
I graduated in 1997 in ohio, took the board exam and acquired my cosmetology license. Since Then I moved out of state and never did my CEU hours to maintain my license , unfortunately it expired. What do I have to do to get it back. Retake classes and the board exam or just do CEU hrs???
Venessa,
This is what Ohio Says: 4713.63 Restoring expired license.
A practicing license, managing license, or instructor license that has not been renewed for any reason other than because it has been revoked, suspended, or classified inactive, or because the license holder has been given a waiver or extension under section 4713.60 of the Revised Code, is expired. An expired license may be restored if the person who held the license meets all of the following applicable conditions:
(A) Pays the restoration fee;
(B) Pays all lapsed renewal fees;
(C) Submits proof satisfactory to the state board of cosmetology that the person has completed all applicable continuing education requirements;
(D) In the case of a practicing license or managing license that has been expired for more than two years, retakes and passes an examination conducted under section 4713.24 of the Revised Code for the branch of cosmetology that the person seeks to practice or type of salon the person seeks to manage.
Effective Date: 04-07-2003
I hope I didn’t violate the Ohio website by putting this here for others to find the information because I know it’s difficult to navigate some sites and find what you are looking for, but here is the url to find more information that you may need. If this is in violation please let me know and I will remove it.
I am a licensed cosmetologist in the state of NC and would like to become an esthetician, will I have to go back to school for additional hours?
Hi Mary,
As a rule a cosmetologist can perform any and all aspects of the cosmetic arts because you are licensed in all aspects of course many states require continuing educational hours to maintain that license. You should check with your state board to get accurate and up to date requirments that would need to be fulfilled. I’m sure to practise as an esthetician you may be required to take a more in depth course. Some states require a seperate license. I advise you to check with your board.
Hi,
I am licensed in the state of Georgia as a master cosmetologist, I have now moved to the state of Alabama my license is current in Georgia, can you tell me what is required to obtain a license in the state of Alabama.
Thanks,

Hi Maki,
New Jersey :
Reciprocity
Is only offered in New Jersey to persons licensed as both a barber and cosmetologist-hairstylist. (New Jersey will recognize applicants without administering an exam to those holding a license from a state whose requirements are equal to or greater than New Jerseys. Licensure by endorsement is offered to cosmetologist applicants if they satisfy the requirements for licensure and presently hold a current license as a barber and beautician in another state or foreign country.)

In other words if you aren’t licensed as a barber also then you wouldn’t be able to practise there unless you take extra hours and qualify for your barber license also.
hi,
I have been wanted to go to cosmetology school since i graduated high school in 2006 but i have been toren on where i should get my hours. i finally decided that i will go to cosmetology school in august 2008 so i applied to one in wisconsin which is a 1800 hour state, the problem i am having is that i have been wanting to move out of wisconsin to a bigger city and if i stay here it will be a whole 12 months i will have to stay here until im done. my question is, it smarter for me to stay in wisconsin to get my clock hours since its so many and wait to move after. then go to california which only requires 1600 hrs, because if i go to california and just do school out there if i ever move back home i would be lacking 200 hrs. i just want to make the right decision for the long run because idk where i may end up so seeing as wisconsin is one of the higher required clock hrs should i stay here and do school then i can go to almost any state and work without having to pick up hours i would just have to take the state board in different states.
Hi Trish,
Just so you know all states are different, but almost all without exception will accept working hours in lieu of the school credits you would just have to have them certified. Some do require that you have worked for at least 2 years at your chosen profession some even longer before they will reciprocate and give credit for your work hours.
Also most states if you start school and decide to move or have to move will let you transfer your hours between state accredited schools.
hi. i attended a beauty school here in lawton, oklahoma and got half way done. it has been about a year since i quit and am now re-considering going back. i would rather apprentice with a hair stylist that i know and get my hours through working with her than going back to a school. i was wondering how many hours i would need being an apprentice to take my state board and if it would be easier to apprentice or go back to a school. thanks!
Hi Shannon,
Read this post about Oklahoma Apprenticeship
I am currently in cosmetology school in Ohio. I am going through the 1500 hour program, but i want to move to california as soon as I graduate. I know california has a requirement of 1600 hours, so I was going to take another 100 at my school before i gradutate. I was wondering how I would go about getting my license in Cali, and if I can get my Ohio cos. license before I leave for Cali (it’s a temporary move , 3-4 years max.)
Hi Jeri,
If I were you I would definitely get the Ohio license first and make sure you keep it in good standing. You will have to take the California State Boards regardless because of inexperience, you may want to read about out of state applicants from the California site.
Anyway you look at it, it’s going to cost you money. Money for your application to take boards, extra money for 100 hours, having those hours certified and sent to Califoria from your board, fees for applying to take boards in California. I don’t envy you with all the headaches you have to look forward to.
I think if I were in your place I would finish the course and get my license and then contact California and see what your options are or talk to your school admin they will advise you best and show you your options and help you find the easiest way to make the transition.
Hi there. I currently live in the state of Ohio. 3 years ago coming up in August I started my junior year of high school at a vocational school. I went for cosmetology but ended up not liking it, so my senior year I went back to my home high school and graduated from there. Now, I’m in cosmetology school again and the school I go to wouldn’t transfer my hours from my vocational school. I’m now wondering if when I graduate from my cos. school now if my hours from my vocational school will still be valid and if I could take my managers test? Will state board recognize all of my hours from both of my schools? If so currently I should have over 1,500 hours but I have yet to gradaute from my current cos school. I tried to find out on the Ohio state board website but found nothing. Thanks!
Katelyn,
I really don’t know and it’s hard for me to keep up with every state so I don’t, but if you have read any other pages on this site I say the same thing over and over….Contact your state board directly for any questions about the laws in your state because they change frequently. Read this and then email your state board directly for any and all questions. If you look further on this blog you will find much information and if you don’t want to spend a few minutes here then check with your stateboard by email or direct phone.
HI, my name is Torri i finished cosmetology school in ut. i havent taken my state boards yet. i was wanting to just move to colorado and take them what should i do?
I live in Florida now and have been licensed for 3 years and am planning a move to Syracuse,New York and I was wondering what the process was for transferring a license from florida to new york and about how long the process takes
I took the course in 1981 in New York. I now resides in NJ. I never took the license. I live in NJ, what do I need to do if I want to work as a beautician in this state. The school I attended has closed down, I do have a copy of my certificate.
My husband was wondering is their a site to get the application to send in his hours online if so can someone tell us where to find it
I am currently attending a cosmetology institute in NYC and interested in moving to FL. I know that NY only requires 1000 hrs and that FL is 1200 but I’m not sure if I would have to go back to school for the 200 hrs or if I could just take FL exam and practical????
Torri,
You will first have to have your verified hours sent from your state to Colorodo and then apply to take the exams there. Read this for more info.. You will also need to fill out and file an Affidavit of Eligibility
Shannon,
Please read this page about NY reciprocity. Florida isn’t on there reciprocity list so you would have to apply to take boards there. You would need to apply to Fla to send your certified hours and you would need to send certified work history, then apply there. Depending on the state could take several months, give or take
Tamarha,
Please read NJ faqs. You will need more schooling.
Alexandra,
You would be required to have the extra 200 hours before you could take the boards in Florida.
Ebony,
I’m not quite sure what you are asking. Where does he want to send his hours and for what? Are you moving or his he trying to apply for a licence? I don’t know what state you are in or where to direct you for more information because you didn’t really give me anything to work with. Every state has it’s own rules and statutes and their own applications. There is a link over there on the right side board for all the state board sites look under Links.
I am currently a student in oregon studing hair and facial. after i graduate and take my oregon boards I will be moving to callifornia. Does anyone know if there is additional training required to get my california licence?? I heard to get your california licence you need to have hair / facial / nails is it true you have to have all 3 ??? Thanks for the help.
Dianne,
You will not have enough training for a California license, Oregon is 1450 and California is 1600 and the test will include nails. You would also have to take their state boards after more training. You wouldn’t be able to just reciprocate with your Oregon License.
So If i get all three (hair, nails, facial) which is a total of 2300 hours in oregon and i get my oregon licence.. would i then be able to get my california licence after taking my california boards???? or will i still require more training ????
Thanks again for your help.
Hi Dianne,
I don’t think you would need more training after that, but California is very stringent in their reciprocity rules. If you had held a license for 3 out of the past 5 years then you wouldn’t have to be retested in California, but after taking the other required course and getting your Oregon License you could then apply to take the California boards after having your certified hours sent to Calif. It’s always best to get in touch with them directly to make sure of all the new rules and statutes.
hi i just finished school in FL, i graduate next week. and have not sent out my state board papers yet, but i’m moving to South Carolina in 3weeks-4weeks. i was wondering how do i go about that, tkae my test here then one there, bc SC is 1500 and FL is 1200, or can i just take my test in SC> im wondering if i have to take more classes, because that is last option right now, due to money.
Ashley,
You would have to have more hours in order to take boards in SC. You would have to have your school hours transfered to a school inSC and finish the remaining hours required. Any way you go it’s going to cost more money.
what happens if i take my stateboard test here then transfer? still more school?
Hi Ashley,
Yes because you have no work history and if you don’t have hours that you can get credit from then you have to have more school hours.
I have my Florida License and am moving to Tn. Will I have to go back for any more hours to transfer it?

Your completed and notarized application
A copy of your green card
A copy of your social security card
A copy of your drivers license or birth record

Your State Board Certification.
Tennessee requires transfer hours to be certified by the State Board, if you are licensed and are transferring hours to qualify for an examination in Tennessee, call the Board you are licensed with and check to see what the procedure is to obtain a license certification. Said certification will need to be an original document, with the State Board seal affixed. Some Boards require a written request for certification, and others require a fee be submitted. Call your Board for this Information.
Linda read about Cosmetology restoration for Illinois. In most states if you have a full Cosmetology license then you could automatically do nails.

I go to beauty school in wisconsin i know the requirement is 1800 hours but my school is telling me i cannot graduate on time cuz i need 180 more hours in chemicals does this make sense?
Myles,
If you didn’t start at the beginning of the course then that would make sense, but if you started when everyone else did then no that doesn’t make sense.
i started with everyone else and they are saying i have to complete 52 manaquin porojects so i can graduate
Myles,
Have you passed all the assignments given you? If not then you would have to redo them and they can even fail you so you are not allowed to graduate if you do not pass in school. Just because you do the hours doesn’t mean you can graduate if you failed in school on your test.
I graduated from Pivot Point International in Bloomingdale, IL in 2003 and got my license. I was not practicing and my license expired in 2006, I still live in Illinois, what do I need to do to renew my license?
My wife is scheduled to take the NJ manicurist test on the 12th. She has her NY license already but must do a written and practical exam for NJ. Is there any study guide she might be able to find to help her with studying for the written part of the exam. Thanks.
Marcia,
Read this for Illinois restoration
Dean your wife should contact the board for a candidate study guide of what to expect during their exams.
Thank you for the quick response.
My girlfriend is moving from Florida to Texas. She has had her cosmetologist license for over 5 years in florida. Florida only requires 1200 hours while Texas requires 1500 hours, will she have to make up for the difference in hours or can she substitute the extra hours with work experience?

I was told that my school would have to give me this form but they said they do not have any forms and i must contact Newark. I am very confused and do not know what to do anymore this has been going on for months now please help
Lupita,
It looks like California has changed their state site all around so the information I have on some of the earlier post are outdated, but try this Out Of State Applicants and Reciprocity Application
Kim,
You will have to get the application from NJ state board. read this pdf and contact them they will tell you everything you need. Nj should have your hours documented since you had already sent in all your forms. You may have to pay a fee or not for them to locate all your information. Hopefully you have saved your transcripts just incase your records were lost. You have 5 years to get your license before you lose your credits.

Hello, I took Cosmetology while in High School and received a South Carolina Registered Cosmetologist License. Effective date was June 2005 and it expired March 2007. I never took any continuing Education classes. I believe in the state of SC you have three years to show state board proof of continuing Ed. classes and pay the renewal fees and any other fees. However is it to late to get all the classes that I need in? How many do I need and what are the cost? Also I was wondering of the cost of renewal fees and any other fees? Could you please tell me what I need to do to get my license back up to date? Also, I never worked in a salon with my license could you tell me how to go about doing that or better yet how to work for myself? What do I need to have for all that and how do I go about doing it? Thanks.
Im from minnesota and was wondering if at all possible if im still eligible to get my cosmetology license. I have completed the hours. 1550 i think it was. But it has been 5 years since i have been in school. What would i have to do become licensed.
I graduated from school 5 years ago in Arizona and made the mistake that I didnt want to persue hair as a career, and never tried to get my license. Now I realize this mistake and was wondering would I have to attend school all over again?
i am from pennsylvania an have had my cosmetology license for over a year now an i am thinking of moving to california. am i going to have to retake my exam or can i transfer my license over?
Nikki,
As far as I know California requires you to have had a working license for 3 out of the past 5 years so I will say that you would have to take their state boards. Check with them directly.
I have been licensed since 1995 in Oregon for hair, nails and esthetics. I went to work for a manufacturer as director of education and maintained my license to do classes and shows and trainings. I then was asked to work as a regional sales manager for 2 years and in this time I have moved and my license had expired. Not being on the front screen as a need, when it occured to me, I had missed the renewal by 20 days. What do I need to do to get my license back in good standing? The gal at the Oregon office was new and not much help at all.
Thank you kindly,
Tamra
Tamra most states give a 30 day grace period so you need to get in touch with your board and talk to someone that knows what they are talking about and have them send you an application to renew and find out if you owe late fees. Read the following that was posted on their web site.
690.085 Renewal of certificates, registrations and licenses. (1) All practitioner certificates shall expire on the last day of the month, two years from the date of issuance, unless renewed prior to the expiration date by payment of the required renewal fee and compliance with other requirements as established by the Board of Cosmetology.
(2) All registrations and licenses shall expire on the last day of the month, one year from the date of issuance, unless renewed prior to the expiration date by payment of the required renewal fee and compliance with other requirements as established by the board.
(3) The Oregon Health Licensing Agency may vary the date of certificate, registration and license renewal by giving to the applicant written notice of the renewal date being assigned and by making prorated adjustments to the renewal fee.
(4) A certificate, registration or license not renewed before it expires may be renewed by payment of the required renewal and late fees and by compliance with other requirements for renewal as determined by the board.
690.385 License renewal; fees; effect of failure to renew; continuing education requirement; rules. (1) Except as otherwise provided in this section, a license issued under ORS 690.365 expires one year after the date of issue unless renewed by payment of the required renewal fee. The Oregon Health Licensing Agency, however, may vary the date of license renewal by giving to the applicant written notice of the renewal date being assigned and by making prorated adjustments in the renewal fee. If payment is transmitted by postal service, the envelope must be postmarked on or before the expiration of the license. If the license expires, the license may be renewed on payment of a renewal fee and late penalty fee established by the agency under ORS 690.350 to 690.430.
(2) The agency may suspend the license of any person who fails to renew. A suspended license may be reactivated upon the payment of a reactivation fee established by the agency under ORS 690.350 to 690.430 and all past unpaid renewal fees.
(3) A person applying for reactivation shall not be required to take an examination as a condition of reactivation if the reactivation occurs within three years after the date of the license expired.
(4) All electrologists and permanent color technicians and tattoo artists must participate in continuing education, with guidelines and effective date to be established by rule of the agency. [1987 c.698 §9; 1993 c.30 §6; 2001 c.104 §267; 2003 c.547 §56; 2005 c.648 §71]
I was just wondering how long after I failed the written part of the State Board exam did I have to retake it? This is just for Nails i dont know if it makes a difference, but that’s all I went for.
Hi. I took my state board exam for Manicuring in April 2007 I believe. I failed the written test and was wondering if I would still be able to re-take it without having to go back through school.
Bonnie if I were you I would reapply immediately. Follow the instructions they sent you with your results or contact your state board.
I have not finished school in wi they require 1800 hours and im moving to florida they just require 1200 could i just take my boards there
Kasandra,
Contact the Florida state board directly and ask them you can either e-mail them or phone them. Rules and regulations change all the time some states so long as you have your transcripts will let you take their boards and others require that you take boards from the state you went to school in. So check with Florida for your answer.
Your website is a great resource for many students, but with the many variances in licenses from state to state, your pat answer of check with the state you are moving to or etc. is safe. I would like to pass on some information that I have as a Director of a School in Oregon. First, the 1450 that you have listed above is strictly for Haircutting in the state of Oregon, if you want to do hair services with chemical services i.e. color and texture services, you need 1700 hours, similar to Barber in CA. If you want Esthetics it is 500 hours, if you want Nail Technology it is 600 hours. There are 100 hours of career development and 150 hours of safety, sanitation, and infection control hours that overlap in each fields training. Oregon does not have a “cosmetologist” license by itself, one must be fully certified in Hair Design, Nails and Esthetics to be the equivalent of a “cosmetologist” in another state. That combined education requirement is 2300 hours, unless the student attends a “competency based” education program which is a whole other rant.
i did just recently have a graduate of my Hair Design program inquire about being a Barber in CA and was told that the education would be recognized , he would just be required to take the exams. Thought you might find this information helpful. Sincerely, Bryan Speight, Administrative Director, Image Designers, College of Cosmetology, Portland Oregon
Hi Bryan,
It would be so great if more educators would answer here and give their insights from the different states believe me I get so tired trying to answer reciprocity questions that change at the drop of a hat from different states and I always tell them to ask the state in question because I simply do not have time to keep up with all the laws in every state.
Thank-you for your information.

I heard to get licenced in California you need to have your hair, esthetics, and nail. is that true or can I just get licenced in hair ??
Di,
Please check with the state board of California as I say often each state is different and regulations and rules for each state change often so for up to date info pleace contact them, but you can read what an Oregon educator had to say. If you type in Oregon in the search box to the right it will pull up any other Information I have on this blog for Oregon.
I have my New York State Cosmetology License and am interested in moving down south, either North Carolina or Florida, I see that there is a significant differences in the hours. What would I have to do to transfer my hours even though I’m already licensed? Also, if I even wanted to come back to New York, would my license be able to transferred back?
Thanks!
Michelle,
As long as you pay your fees to NY you can keep them active without transfering them back. Depending on how long you have had your NY license your working hours could count for the hours you need to make up in schooling, but please contact the state you are interested in and check with them because laws and rules change daily. Go to their state site and look up what you need to know. I have a list on the far right sidebar of the different state sites.
Hi, I will be graduating from school in 2010 from cosmetology. just taking core classes atm. but, I will be moving to Washington state shortly after finishing school and getting my liscense. what would I have to do to get my liscense in Washington?
Jamie,
By 2010 all the rules and regulations could have been changed. I would suggest when you get close to your graduation that you talk to your admin. and contact the state board for which you plan to move to get specifics both will be happy to help you with your move and what you need to know at that time.
Hii, I have been working as a licensed cosmetologist in Rhode Island for a little less than two years now. I am moving to California this summer and would like to transfer my license. To my knowledge CA requires 1600 hours and my RI license only required 1500 hours, so I am 100 hours short. Will my experience make up for that or will I have to go back to school? Is it expensive to transfer to another state?
I am currently working in CT and have just taken a job in manhatten, how do i go about transferring hours
I’m currently a student in KY which requires 1800 hours. I’m interested in working in IN once I’m finished with school, which requires 1500 hours. Could you please let me know what steps I need to take to have my IN license. Will I need to take IN board test as well?
Thanks for your help!!!

I just graduated from cosmetology school in arizona and will be moving to san diego. I have searched every where to try and find out what will be on california’s state board and havent found that much out about it. Is there any way you can find out or let me know where to look?
-thanks
Amy,
I’m not sure how updated this is, but it will give some guideline Ca. goverment form You can also order video’s and publications to help you prepare, just do a search for california cosmetology state board exam.
I am going to school in Missouri which requires 1500 hours and am thinking of moving to Arizona which requires 1600. If I finish out my schooling here, and take my boards in Missouri will I be able to transfer my license once I get to Arizona? ….Or, should I just take boards out there? Will I have to make up those 100 hours? What is the best way for me to go about that?
Thanks!
–Hannah
Hannah,
Since you are a student and don’t have work hours you would need those extra hours so if it were me I would have my transcripts sent to a school in Arizona and finish there and then take your boards in Arizona.
I have my cosmetology liscense for louisiana and im moving to washington d.c.! what do i have to do to get my liscense there?
I have not renew my NYS cosmetologist license since 2006, is it too late..
I moved my NC to NYS. I just paid the license fees due to the fact North Carolina has more hour credits than NYS. I think the fee was only $20. You need your test scores from North Carolina to apply for a NYS license. I wrote to Raleigh, NC told them what I was trying to do,the information was sent to me at no cost and then the rest was easy. Be sure not to have issues such as felony, child support or a bank lien because my cousin tried to do what I did and realized he had pending issues.
i recently got my cosmetology license in in california in september and im moving to oregon how do i go about getting my license in oregon? thanks
Brooke
