Work In A Salon First Before Opening Your Own

July 5th, 2007

If your in beauty school or your planning on going I wish you the best of luck. So many of the girls had plans of opening their salon the minute they received their license. My advice would be to put that off until you have worked in a salon and actually know how it’s run on a day to day basis.

They try to condition you in school for the real world, but things don’t always run the way they are suppose to according to what you learn in school. You are primarily learning all the basics and actually just enough to get you through so you can take your state boards and pass.

To prepare you after you have qualified and passed all your courses they have mock boards and you practice everything you have been taught so you will know exactly what to expect and how boards will be performed. They really try to prepare you for this great day.

You have to supply your on model that you will work on under pressure of taking your boards. Don’t be upset if you don’t pass the first time lots don’t. If you fail a portion you do not have to take the whole thing over just the portion you missed. You may find your more nervous than you should be. Try to relax. I was a nervous wreck and it’s easy to tell people to relax, but not so easy to do.

It would be much better to get lots of experience in a real salon before considering owning your own as I said before. You will have time to build up a list of clients and if they like you they will follow you to your new location. It’s really great when you have followers if you open your own straight away you will have all the expenses of getting a business license, equipment, paying liability taxes, stocking your supplies, finding the right specifications for your business and following all the state requirements.

You will very likely already be in debt from all your student loans and it’s not true if you build it they will come. You need clients first before you even think about opening your own shop. I have known several that started with high hopes, but they just couldn’t sustain it not having the experience that was needed in order to succeed. So whatever you decide good luck with it.
